I finally solved this problem by replacing the oxygen sensor.
Another symptom of this sensor, besides the hesitation
was wild rpm fluctuations from 1500 to 500 when cold.
It would do this 4 or 5 times before stabilising rpms.
It's a Bosch universal. works good. connect the white wire from
the loom to the black wire on the sensor. the other two wires
can go anywhere.
I discovered my rear diff was bad, so I took it off and the rear
drive shaft. the front drive shaft is still there. I cut the rear
axles near the wheel bearings so they just free wheel.
I now have more performance and FWD economy.
My gas tank was rusted out from salt, so I found a 98 tank
at the junkyard which fits. could be the last year for the same tank.
the fuel lines are plastic coated on 98 so are less likely to rust.
the fuel delivery line and fuel return lines are the same but the
evap lines are much different. I left them disconnected and there
is no smell or any running problem.
thanks for everyone's help along the way.
Cheers, Craig NY
