Newbie Legacy Questions :?:

Post by Comper100 »

Watcha Peeps

I'm new to the forum, so hello all!

I'm seriously considering getting a 92-96 2.0l Legacy quad cam turbo saloon, i own a classic car at the mo and although its great fun and i pay no tax its a pain in the arse with maintainance and wet roads and the like. So i've opted for a more sensible-ish car. Although my mate has an sti powered legacy i'd like a few pointers with common probs, what to look for and running costs as i can't find much info on them like all the different versions etc.

And yes im english

Any light shed would be great cheers.

Thanks

Welcome to Legacy Central. Im not as familiar with the dsm cars so some of you UK guys feel free to correct me but here are a couple of things that are probably similar to look for. Check for leaking valve covers and front crank seal (oil dripping from the middle of the timing belt cover). These are probably the most common problems but are both easy to fix. In general Subarus are very easy to work on and great cars to own. Good luck and hopefilly we'll see you again soon as an owner of turbo saloon. :D

Depends where in Oxfordshire you are, but you could do worse than speak to the guys at Fenny Compton Garage in Warwickshire (Tel: 01295 770244). They're official dealers but really friendly and helpful. My Legacy has over 180,000 miles on it but they still take me seriously when I drop in!

Turbo saloons seem to be quite hard to find over here, even doing a national search on Autotrader.

Some of the things I've seen occur on my UK car:

Rust along the leading edge of the roof - obviously a botched windscreen replacement sometime in the past.

Water pump - you'll see the water dripping from about six inches back under the car, more or less in line with the grille badge.

White smoke from the exhaust - I get LOADS of this at this time of year until the Cat has warmed up. Don't sweat it... Similarly with steam coming from the bonnet vent.

If you look at look at some of the other posts on this forum you'll find loads of really useful stuff about what goes wrong but my only advice would be to really chill about the mileage - high mileage doesn't seem to have any great effect on these cars. Mine still doesn't burn oil...

Oh yeah. Also look for rust along the door bottoms and the front wings. Doesn't look nice...
