Suicidal crank pulley...

Post by Chefasaurus »

The guy I got the car from, had done a shadetree repair on the main pulley, when he changed the timing belts. This led to a minor wobble in the pulley. It wasn't a big deal, until last night...

The crank pulley doesn't spin anymore, even with the motor running. None of the accessories are spinning either, consequently. Upon starting it, a whole lot of sparks shoot out from the pulley area.

I've got a feeling that his shadetree repair, is gonna end up costing me a whole motor. It's cheaper to replace, than to rebuild. :(

Take your accesory belts off.

use a 22mm socket to remove the crank bolt if it is still in the front of the pulley.

Then inspect the crank shaft snout. there should be a groove on one side for holding the keyway. If that still ooks good, source a used good pulley with the keyway undamaged. Get a brand new woodruff key. install and use some loctite. Torque to 130-135 ft lbs.
