Looking to lower my SS soon

Post by celliott89 »

Hey guys, I've got a 1993 leggy ss and I am looking to lower it. I've heard along with making it look cooler, it helps braking a ton over stock as well as acceleration and cornering... Anyways what springs should I buy and how much should I set aside for the springs and instillation... I'm kinda a newb to tuning cars but have big plans for my ss... Also I am wondering about what type of exhaust to do soon, as well as an intake. Any input on the following would be very helpful. Thanks

Almost forgot, If I lower it, can I get away with stock struts or should I replace them? Would struts from a wrx ect fit?

There is an awesome thread on here about the different lowering options so do a search and you'll get a lot more info than i can give you. It really depends on how low you want it, what kind of driving you do, and how nice of ride you prefer. There are two big names you'll hear for our cars, whiteline and the eibach pro kit. As for me, i didn't like either because they didn't lower the car enough. They both only lower the car around an inch. I've heard other people love them though, it all prederence. Basically the stock struts aren't gonna handle any lowering springs for very long due to the higher spring rate. I looked around a lot and figured out what i wanted, i'm using 02-03 struts and pro drive springs that i got from my buddy, they rake the front down a little more than the rear so the front wheel wells don't look bigger than the rear. I plan on buying either KYB GR-2s or AGXs for a bugeye in the future. Like i said, its all prederence though and how much money you want to spend.

I'd recommend checking out some of the stickies

Lowering does help looks and does reduce some of the body movement which can help other things. However there are drawbacks with going too low. You should be able to use some of the WRX stuff, and Whiteline & H&R make springs specific to our cars.

Im trying to do it on as much of a budget as possible... I think ill probably end up tracking down those gr2 struts on craigslist or something and then look into springs... Im definitely not trying to slam it cause I had 17s on it at stock ride height and it rubbed alot (ruined a good set of tires)... I plan on staying with 15s or 16s in the future and like occasional rally cross and I drive in the snow alot so that 1 inch drop should do it...

How did it rub at stock ride height...? If it was on the inside that's not a height issue, that's an offset issue.

Watch craigslist, Nasioc, and the parts shed for suspension for our cars and WRXs, you should be able to find some pretty good deals on springs, or even coilovers(I've seen a few sets for $400). Since you seem to be concerned with handling too, look into sway bars, there's a few dirt cheap options that swap from other cars.

As far as exhaust, endless options there, pretty much anything will give you the same result, depends on the sound you want more than anything. Intake, leave stock and desnorkel/coffee cup for power, if you want more turbo sound you can do a CAI or short ram but you'll get little power benefit, and possibly a slight loss depending what you do.

Read around a bit, there should be stickies on all of these things so it shouldn't be hard to find the info.

Just a tip though for exhaust... Pretty much anything for a WRX will bolt up except for the cat back section, It has to be lengthened. Depending on what direction your trying to take the car I would recommend Leaving the stock manifolds and up-pipe and just do a nice down pipe and muffler. I had an aftermarket header and up pipe on my car and was un-impressed. The low end torque suffers quite a bit. Plus IMO the stock manifolds give a better sound.
