random electrical stuff!

Post by RhinO »

Hey Guys, just need some help with figuring out what is wrong with my car. Every time I put the key in the ignition it makes the worlds most annoying beep that gives me a headache! What is going on? Video explains it.

other "electrical" things I've been noticing.
When I plug in my phone charger after it rains there seems to be a sound coming through the speakers linked to how much throttle I give it.
Also, the seat belts have been "clicking" and acting really weird recently. The driver side belt when fastened says it is unfastened(in the dashboard display) and continually beeps!

The noise is the key chime, however it's supposed to go on and off. It sounds like you may have bad grounds somewhere, and/or possibly a short.

I'd suggest starting with checking the grounds from the battery to the chassis and starter/engine.

I've decided it's definitely the grounds! Most of the electronics start freaking out after rain/after I hit puddles. Where can I get a diagram of all the grounds? I looked at previous posts, but couldn't find any with images (as a n00b, I prefer images). Thanks a lot Josh! I see why you're the Admin. haha

Also, Where do I purchase the different gauge wires? How long can I expect to do this job in?

You can find a lot of wiring diagrams/manuals in this thread. Most link to my server.

What year is your Legacy?

I have a portion of the 92 engine electrical diagrams, and all of the 90 wiring diagrams.

However, here is the diagram for just the chassis ground points.

I would recommend you focus on the two main ground points from the battery. If you follow the wiring from the negative terminal of the battery, one will go to the chassis and the other will go to the engine where the starter is located. Check to make sure both of those are good. Use a volt meter to check resistance from one end of the cable to the other. It should be 0 ohms.

Do some additional testing and let us know what you find out.

So the key chime stays on even when the key is in the ON position and the door is closed?

If so, the key chime may be what's bad. There is a small two wire connector that goes away from the ignition switch. If you can find that under the steering column, unplug it and that should disable the key chime.

You're welcome.

So is the other electrical problems still there, or was it just that?

Seems like most of the other electrical problems were solved by cleaning the 2 grounds you mentioned (they were corroded). Things that randomly got batter after cleaning the grounds, is that I have experienced much better Idling! More response from the Throttle and Better starting!

The only electrical I think still wrong with my car is I may have a small short or something because the seat belt light always flashes for the driver seat(even when fastened).

And I'm unsure if plugging in my phone charger will lead to the random whining noise that correlates with how much throttle I'm giving it, because it only does it when it rains.
