i have a 92 legacy L wagon auto tranny stock. my problem is when i get it on the highway to top it out, it tops at 85mph. speedometer says it will do 140. why is this and how can i fix it my buddys run dsm's so gots to keep up with them cant do that only going 85 please help!!!!

You need to do a few things. I'd start with checking the plugs and pull the timing covers off and line the crank gear up with the notch on the oil pump below the crank sensor and see if the 2 cam pulleys line up with their marks. That will tell you if your timing is correct. Do a compression check and see what kind of compression you have. Should probably be around 175 per cylinder. You shouldn't have more than 10% difference between any two cylinders or your rings are bad.

Is your transmission shifting through all 4 gears? Maybe you're not getting passed 3rd.

It will shift through all the gears it will go into 4th gear even doublef checked by hitting the manual button on the shifter going through all the gears myself ill put in 4th but stil only 85mph. Fyi I have it in fwd to save mpg dont know if it puting it in fwd compared to awd would limit my mph.

I dont know if that affects speed but that wouldnt surprise me. You should immediately remove that fwd fuse though. Its not meant for daily driving in fwd. Its for emergencys only. You will burn up your duty c solenoid in the trans if you keep driving it in fwd. Also the manual button isnt for ahifting the car manually. Its for traction in slippery conditions like snow. When in manual you can put it in 2nd gear and it wont downshift into 1st so you wont get wheelspin and lose traction.

Take the fuse out and see how fast it will go.

Took out the fwd still no results. Running a compression test tonight. You think mabey the govenor?

No. Im pretty sure there is no governer. Ive hit 130 in my legacy and the speedo was past 140.

Its probably the fastest it can go. Lol. But on a more serious note, you probably shouldn't take that car past 85 in the first place. Its old and you would die in a wreck at that speed anyway. Consider it a governor.

Well, I'm not sure what would cause the speed limiter, my auto '93 has been to 125 so theres no speed limiter. Have you gotten it in power mode to see if that will take you faster? When you get to 85 what is the rpm?

Haha! It should do more. I took my 90 wagon with 4EAT to 100 all the time and even 115 once on a long ass straightaway.

Yeah I've had my 92 auto wag over 100 plenty of times. I agree with checking plugs/wires and timing belt. Does it shudder or do anything else weird? Make sure none of the test connectors under the dash are plugged in, I had that issue when I first got the car.

The FWD fuse is for emergencies/testing only as others had said. Not only will it kill your duty c solenoid, you're not going to get any better gas mileage. If anything you'll get worse because now you're just dragging the weight of the rest of the AWD instead of using it.
