Quick trip up the mountain

Re: Quick trip up the mountain
From my near-disastrous outing to Red Breaks in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument:
The desert roads in southern Utah get very, very sketchy when wet. The sand and clay turn into extremely slick mud. As I was doing a little mild canyoneering in Red Breaks, it started to snow. I bailed out of the slot about a third of the way through and slogged four miles back to the car. The washes were now full of water and the ground was slick and saturated.
Worried about my ability to get back to the highway, I prepared to spend a night stranded at the trailhead. My clothes were soaked but I was well stocked with food so I undressed, pulled out my blanket and chowed down. About three hours passed with no sign of the storm letting up.
Finally, just before sundown, the storm broke and I decided to make a go for it. I really didn't want someone to call out the SAR since I hadn't returned or checked in for the night. The drive out included a couple of wash crossings and a lot of fishtailing. The wagon came close to sliding off the doubletrack a few times but managed to stay on trail.

Re: Quick trip up the mountain
Thanks guys. It did amazingly well. I've done a fair amount of snow and ice driving but this little car handled mud very well considering it's riding on generic all-seasons.

Time for another hit-and-run on this thread of mine. This is from the Goblin Valley/San Rafael Swell area in central Utah.

On the way to Upper Muley Twist Canyon in Capitol Reef National Park. This is a high-clearance 4WD road.

I did, thanks for noticing. It really needs some all-terrain tires to complete the package.

That first shot is unreal! What kind of camera are you using?
Re: Quick trip up the mountain
I currently shoot with a Canon T2i (aka 550D) and two lenses, the Canon 10-22mm EF-s f/3.4-4.5 USM and Canon 24-70mm EF f/2.8L. The shots on the first post were with an older Canon Rebel DSLR I'd borrowed.
