allrighty. Duer to transmition issues decided to stop messing with the 4EAT and do a manule swap. picked up a 5 speed out of an 06 2.5 rs. health issues have ruined my income and slowed my progress to a crawl. finally got some bang in the bank and decided to pick up a flywheel while I had the cash. wanted a lighter flywheel, but avoiding super light ones as id rather avoid sacrificing as much streetabiliy as possible.

Goto a web sight and they have 17 different flywheels for various models with a difference in cost of upto 30%.

Ok, now. its really hard to fuck up a solid piece of Chromemolly. I cant imagine the bolt patterns would vary outside of possibly engine to engine. lead me to possible difference in starter/starter location.

So my question is.... what flywheel do I need to mate my trans to my ej22t. is the bolt pattern different? The starter tooth pattern? will a 2.5 flywheel mount to the ej22t and if so will there be any starter issues? (as in do I need a differant starter).

I believe the starters are the same on all EJ engines. Therefore the flywheels should be the same as well except the 6spd ones maybe.

I suggest buying a flywheel that has a removable insert so when it wears out you can just buy another insert and you have a brand new flywheel again. Clutchmasters uses this design and for about $90 I got a brand new insert for my flywheel.

The flywheels need to match the trans. The engine doesn't matter.

The turbo & non-turbo trans require different flywheels, with the exception of the newer turbo WRX models (around 06). The STi has something even different.

Anyway, this is what I believe you will need.

I've been looking into this same thing and what I've found out (researching, no actual hands on yet) is that the 02-05 WRX flywheel and clutch kits are compatible with the Tleg trans and it's ej22t. If you replace the flywheel with one from a WRX, you'll need to get a clutch kit for a WRX. Alternately, if you keep the Legacy flywheel, you need to get a legacy clutch kit. I say that because I believe I read that the WRX clutch is a little bit bigger in diameter. This will net you some more torque holding ability due to the increased size. So that and the multiple choices are great benefits. I'm leaning toward the aluminum flywheel instead of chromoly due to the replacement ring gear and friction surface feature.

Here are some that I'm looking at getting for my project car.

The Fidanza aluminum flywheel - Part # 110001 - They have built quality and strength and the removable friction face like Kimo was talking about. About $300 new and $60 for the replacement faces.

F1 Aluminum Flywheel - Part # F55013FA - F1 Racing seems to be a legit company. They have an address and phone number in California. Their "parent" company carries and distributes major brands (Fidanza, Brembo, Exedy, etc) and they have a 12 month warranty. I think the F1 Racing stuff is their house brand or re-branded products.
