16g mods

Post by Mt.HOODrat »

so i have an opportunity to buy a 16g for a very low price due to the fact that it has the 90 degree inlet like our vf10-11 does. he is a wrx guy and has no use for it.
i have a td04 as well but the fact that it has a under manifold inlet makes me not wanna use it, dont want a silicone 90 sucking in on itself under boost. so i would like to use the 16g if i can safely.

what is the bare minimum for supporting mods? is it too big to just throw on and run? i want to run 10psi with a tmic, 3'' tbe, mbc, and thats about it.

doable or are injectors and some sort of tuning or EM required?

BSOD2600 did some ECU logging with that exact setup in this thread:

http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=39701

His conclusions basically were: with stock injectors/ECU tune, the TD05+TMIC was completely maxing out the stock setup at around 11 psi.

So, I'd say 9-10 would be safe enough on that setup. Keep in mind the TD05 will flow a lot more volume (cfm) of air at the same psi as your VF11. So, same PSI, more air and more power.

A TD05-16G is a pretty nice setup on the stock motor. As noted, you'll max the MAF & injectors around 11psi. I ran this setup for a while, before upgrading the engine management.

Another note:

Full spool comes early with a TD05-16g and pulls hard to redline. :) I see 18psi by 2800-2900 on mine. Not as good as the VF11, but not as bad as a lot of other bigger turbos.

so i finally got to see the turbo in person, still dont know what it is exactly, but its odd. it has a 90 degree elbow inlet welded onto the compressor housing but its not pointing straight up like it should, it points to the side towards the airbox. anyone ever seen a setup like that?

Sounds like the turbo is clocked? Did you notice if the compressor outlet was pointing correctly?

no the compressor outlet is about where it should be, the inlet is pretty much pointing the other way. pretty weird, i think i might pass on this one. kind of a shame, i could have got it for 50 bucks. and it has a gt spec up pipe on it.

I wouldn't give up on it for just that...$50 for a TD05 is a steal....spend the $$ on custom intake, which you'd need for most other turbo upgrades anyway.

It actually gets rid of one extra bend, too....just make sure it'll fit!

As you can see in this pic of a TD05 install, if it was turned out the compressor inlet might hit the IM.

What did they have it installed on?

That looks familiar... It should since it's my setup now... :-D

That's odd that the one you're looking at seems to be clocked, but yeah, $50 is a steal so if you still have the chance to pick it up you might as well.

not even clocked, its just the inlet elbow is welded on at a 45 degree angle towards the fender instead of just pointing straight up
