Inlet elbow questions

Post by Mt.HOODrat »

so now that i am pursuing a 16g turbo, ive been thinking about what to do for the 90degree inlet elbow. originally i wanted a jdm td05-16g with the elbow already cast into the compressor housing like on our vf-10's. but i realized that a good one isnt that easy to come by, so then i began to think about just getting something like the blouch 16g or any of the many 16g options. but the whole silicone 90degree elbow makes me think it will collapse under boost.. anyone have this problem? what elbows are you guys successfully using? it seems that even 10-15 psi could suck in the elbow. any thoughts?

should i try to get a turbo with a metal 90 degree inlet elbow,

or should i be fine using a silicone 90 degree inlet elbow?

and secondly? is it a good idea to get an aluminum elbow welded on? anyone do that?

Silicone will be fine. If you're worried about it just put a couple snug hose clamps on the bend, it'll help reinforce the sidewall. I'd just put a silicone bend in it and forget about though.

I have 90/coupler/hose clamps sitting around, PM if you're interested.

If you get a good reinforced elbow you should be ok. There was someone that had issues with an elbow collapsing under acceleration. I think he replaced it with a better one and it has been ok.

^Sure...bring that up again! :-)

I had an extended radiator hose from a custom 'coffee cup/resonator delete' mod to my TD04. When I hit over 12psi it would collapse and the boost would drop to 0....took weeks to figure out as it was fine when <40°.
The hose was just too long and flexible to hold up under boost when warm.

:-D :-D I read all about that about that a month ago while I was doing the TD04 upgrade. lol. OP- I just did the swap and used the 90* inlet from siliconeintakes.com, works great with a little trimming. However, the silicone DOES hit the intake manifold (not sure if everyone has this problem). You will also be sticking a peice of exhaust tubing down the top of the 90* inlet to clamp the other intake piece to... further reinforcing the silicone.

I have a 90 degree silicone on my td04 also. Hits my intake manifold also. I could probably trim just enough off it to make it barely miss but its working fine right now. I cut the top few inches off the original 90 on the vf11 and used it on the other end of the silicone 90 so it attached to the black accoridian factory pipe like a champ
