hey guys, my timing belt blew on my 2000 forester. its either a $600 job or put my turbo in which i want to do. problem is the obd bologne.
if i use my ej22t and ecu i can run it for a while no problem until i have to do an emissions test in 2 years. i am from ontario btw. some questions
1. is there a obd2 ej20g ecu? if so could i get rob to do the ecu to run the motor with obd2 compliant?
2. i have seen on ebay there are obd1 to obd2 adapters, could i use this for the testing to tap into the ecu and pass that way?
3. other more involved one is to use the 2.5L heads and intake and run the current wiring and ecu from the forester, but i have yet to get a response as to if i need a piggyback to run the turbo or a full standalone unit.
this is also my daily driver guys and i will have no vehicle until this gets back on the road. easy way i guess is to swap my heads from another sohc i have and just change the belt, water pump etc...but for $600 i'd rather put my turbo in and spend the $600+ on the turbo to get it to work.
what are your thoughts guys? help would be appreciated asap

Re: ej22t motor and ecu into 2000 forester need electrical h
I thought about doing something similar with a gen 2 legacy with ej22t. There are a lot of options. You could use the usdm 02-03 wrx ecu as it was the only ej20t that the us recieved as far as i know. I don't know how well it would work but i'm sure someone else can chime in on that. Also, being obd 2, there are a lot more options for piggybacks or a reflash. Standalone is always an option but spendy. I don't know about the whole US but in Washington it is illegal to delete obd 2 and go to obd 1. I myself don't have to do emissions so i had planned on leaving the obd 2 stuff in but adding my obd 1 harness and ecu so i could use either one and be able to sell the car down the road if need be. But that will be a clusterf**k of wiring and such. I don't know anything about the obd adapters but anyway you look at it, your factory Forester ecu will not run right with a turbo without some help from a piggyback or reflash.

Sorry, i did not notice you're from Ontario. I don't know the laws up there so you may want to look into that.

ya i was thinking about swapping and using the legacy ecu and wiring. im going to end up just ordering the timing belt and water pump etc and most likely find some wrx heads/intake and do that swap into the sf

Yeah, that would probably be the best route if you're trying to get it back up and running quickly. What were you saying cost 600 about the water pump/timing belt, the labor and parts? Its pretty straight forward putting on the belt and pump and it looks like you know your way around with a wrench since you're doing the ej swap into the mazda truck which is cool by the way. I love custom oddball swaps like that. I want to get a ae86 gts rwd corolla and swap an ej into one. I'm sure its been done but i haven't seen it. Those cars are so well balanced as it is, an ej would give it an even better drift platform.

ya from subaru the oem parts came to $601. its head gaskets, water pump, timing belt, and all the other gaskets and fun stuff. my dad is a mechanic and a teacher now, so i have always been tinkering since a little kid.
the truck will be a fun build for sure. i've been working hard outside work building projects to fund this build as i dont make a lot building kitchens. i will be building it stock to start, maybe some bigger injecters, turbo and intercooler just to start.

Hi,
EDIT: Are your heads OK? You're likely to have bent valves w/a broken T-belt....the block is probably OK.
I put an EJ22T block under my '98 SF heads. This was on the DOHC and also a different ECU, BUT go over to RS25.com and read up on others who have done this to a '99+ RS, as that will be 99% the same as your setup. You can put the EJ22T under the EJ251/3's SOHC heads, from what I've read.
I know from my research the '99+ had more tuning options for the ECU - I can't recall anything 'off the shelf' though.
I tried a Greddy emanage ultimate -a Piggy-back, that ultimately I couldn't get tuned (2 different tuners tried!), and I couldn't figure it out.
The 'good' w/the piggy-back is you keep the OBD2 as is, and don't have to mess w/emissions in 2 years....meaning you should pass normally....unless they do some kind of visual check under the hood.
EDIT: #3 - If the '00 is MAF-based you can get away w/running it w/low - 5-6psi - of boost w/out a piggy-back, but remember - the EJ22T is a lower compression, so you'll be slow off boost. Better/safer to get a piggyback to control bigger injectors and timing.
As this is your DD and only car (?), fixing what you have is your best 'quick' answer.

Re: ej22t motor and ecu into 2000 forester need electrical h
thanks for the great reply. as this is my daily i just went and fixed the timing belt. my brother has a 01 impreza rs i think with a spare engine. i took his heads off and did a head job to my engine. my valves were all bent and nothing would have sealed. i will keep the 22t block and find some wrx heads/intake/ecu most likely now. better flowing heads with more options aftermarket
