Help with gas tank

Has anyone figured out how to take a dent out of the bottom of the gas tank without taking it out of the car?

I have a sizable dent in the drivers side that is pushing up on my fuel gauge sensor and now it is not working and i think it is plugging the bottom of the metal tube on that side(the transfer pipe, sending or whatever that thing with the filter on the end of it is).

To give you an idea of the size of the dent in the tank, when i set the sending unit down in the tank, it lifts the front edge of the sealing lid by 1/2 - 3/4 inch up of the tank.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, because what ever the PO ran over pushed the foot pan on the drivers side back seat up(hammered back down with rubber mallet) and put that big dent in the tank.

The thing with the filter on it is your fuel pump. Can you stick something in the tank and use a hammer to hit it and pound the dent back down?

Are you sure that's the pump? I didn't see any pump motor when i pulled it out. I tried hammering it down, but i think that i am going to have to have something else down in the tank, so i can get better swing room. I only had about 5 inches of swinging room with a rubber hammer.

That's what I meant. Get a pipe or something and stick it in there and hit it with a hammer. or maybe you could put your car jack on top of it and underneath the rear deck behind the seat and extend the jack to press down on the pipe. This may warp the rear deck I don't know how strong it is so don't blame me if something goes wrong.

I would suggest using a wooden down or something that is non sparking. Otherwise, you could be asking for trouble. I would agree that if you can stick something into the tank via the access holes on the top of the tank, that's your best bet. It will be a tight squeeze, especially if you have a sedan.

I was in the dented tank club. I opted to switch tanks.. Not something I would do again.

yeah it is a sedan, i am going to find a 2x4 long enough to spread the load out on the rear deck tray and then a proper board and bottle jack to try and push it out. I think there will be less chance of it cracking the tank that way.
