93 Leagcy wagon EJ 22 motor 5 speed manual non turbo motor. The motor blew and we went to the Subaru Junk Yard in Gaston OR and got a replacement motor. So far so good right? Well THe old motor coming out has two electrical wiring harness plugs that plug into the car wiring harness in the Driver side fender well. However the new motor ... has three electrical wiring harness plugs right were the old motor had two. We just noticed this and we are confused.
The new motor (an autiomatic tranny) was supppose to be a direct drop in, however three big fat plugs. The old motor (5 Sp Manual) has only two big fat electrical plugs. What is up with the thrid plug?
The third plug is in my hand the two that match the old motor are dangling
What year/make/model engine did you pull for the replacement?? I also recently did an engine swap in my 94. I took a 1992 auto 2.2 and put it in my 94 5-speed 2.2 with no real problems.

I believe that you need a 1990-1994 engine for a direct drop in because its OBD 1 instead of OBD 2. I'm not 100% sure but if someone else could clarify.

The 90-91 EJ22 had 3 plugs on the engine harness. The 92-94 only had 2. All gen 1 legacies were OBD1.

Thanks for the information. What do we do so that we can use the new motor. John told me to just swap the intakes. Is that correct? The new motor (One that we purchased) has a total among the three pluigs of thirty pins. My son counted 24 pins on the two electrical plugs on the Old Motor (blown and in the car). What are the extra 6 pins for?
If we did just swap the intakes will all the electrical connections off the harness (Intake from the Old Motor), then would the electrical connections match correctly to the sensors and stuff on the New Motor?
Yes, you can swap the intakes with the intact wiring harness. I swapped a 1993 turbo for a 1990 N/A using the whole intake assembly from the N/A, but I'm running it N/A, so I know this works.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.
As mentioned, you should just swap the intake manifold.
The other thing to note is the the 92-94 non-turbo Legacies had different fuel injectors than the 90-91 non-turbo Legacies. From my experience the 92-94 injectors flow a little more than the 90-91 injectors. So you need to match the correct ECU to the correct injector. By swapping the entire intake manifold you match the engine electrical plugs and keep the same injectors that match your ECU.
