Can 95-98 EJ22 heads work on 90-94?

Post by Baddog »

I know 95-99 is OBD2 and 90-94 EJ22's are OBD1. But can you use the heads off a 95-98 EJ22 and use the IM from the 90-94? Or are there sensors in the heads that are different?

Only thing I can think of is the EGR port on the drivers side. Plug it and run it! ;-)

If someone knows of any other difference speak up! :D

I believe the compression ratio will be different, and I'm not sure whether the intake manifold will fit.

Block off EGR with a homemade plate of steel or aluminum. Intake manifold will bolt up no problem. All 90-98 EJ22 heads have the same 41 cc chamber volume.

So you can for sure use 90-98 EJ22 Heads on 92 EJ22 N/A block? Just use the current IM?

If so this is great news and expands my search for a used set of heads. Only thing I can think of though is the type of rockers. But I dont think that will effect anything will it?

Yeah some have roller rockers/cams.

Also, the newer heads have a single exhaust port vs. the 90-94's dual exhaust ports.

So revisiting this. Can I use a 90-98 long block and just use the IM and sensors from her current engine? Or am I limited to 90-94 EJ22's ?

As I mentioned the exhaust ports are different between the 90-94 & 95+ EJ22 heads. So you'll need to match the exhaust manifold to whichever heads you use.

Other than that, the minor differences in cam timing shouldn't be a big deal, and as long as you use the IM & sensors from the current engine in the car, it should work.

90-95 have dual ports. 96-99 have the single ports. I know that.

Exhaust manifold is no big deal it will get a custom exhaust either way.

I am needing a definite answer. Because of OBD1 and OBD2. Because if I get a 95-99 longblock and it doesnt work. I am going to be out of money I really DO NOT have. I have got to get this car back on the road so I can focus on other things.
