SVX in a junkyard in Jessup, MD

Thought I'd give anyone looking for an EG33 a heads-up -- as of Friday, there's an SVX at Crazy Ray's Junkyard in Jessup, Maryland. I saw it there on Friday and the engine was all there and superficially looked good.

It's a self-serve junkyard, but if you unbolt the engine and torque converter they'll bring a forklift out to lift out the engine. Their price for a motor is $200. The car's green and at the far back end of one of the rows of import cars.

haha I live in Laurel and saw it to...was tempted to just buy the whole thing

no damage to the body which makes me wonder why they trashed it?

It's entirely possible there are internal problems with the motor or, more likely, the transmission. I dunno.

I know this is a bit off topic....but I was curious about the svx igniter, how easy are these to get? I have been thinking about swapping my engine over to COP so I can use individual cylinder knock detection with my stand alone. I know the SVX igniter will work, but are there better options out there? Anything from the newer Subies?

They're easy to get new/remanufactured; they're just kind of expensive, like around $150-$250 from an auto parts store.

Newer coil-on-plug Subarus use coils with built-in ignitors; the coils each have 3 pins on them. One goes to +12v, one to ground, and one to the ignition signal from the ECU. I can't think of a reason you couldn't wire them up that way and use them.

Or if you use the older style of coil-on-plug coils, like EJ20Gs and EG33s use, you should also be able to use two EJ22 ignitors.

Oh, forgot to mention -- I believe the new coils bolt to the valve cover in a different way from the old ones, so that may be a problem with trying to use the new ones.

I kind of would like to use the separate coil & igniter setup so I could use an MSD ignition. But we'll see what I end up doing.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. An SVX ignitor or two stock ignitors, four coils from an EG33 or EJ20G, and an MSD DIS-4 would be a sweet setup.
