new front axle.... which are ABS?

Post by jp233 »

Got a ripped boot in a front axle on the 94 AWD car. I've changed plenty of axles on the 93 FWD car, but not one with ABS. I'm assuming that the ABS axles have gear teeth that feeds info to the ABS sensor.

Looking around at the parts stores, the Fenco and GSP ones from Advance say they are non-ABS ??

Not listed for the O'Reilly or Autozone ones.... what gives?

am I going to have to go look at the things in the store and find one that works?

ABS and non-ABS axles are the same. The toothed part of the speed sensor is mounted to the knuckle.

As far as I know, there are just two types of front axles for our cars -- FWD and AWD. The AWD ones are somewhat less beefy but still fit correctly.

Roger all, thanks. Yeah, when I got the brakes apart last night I realized that the toothed hub is part of the knuckle.

I'll be trying to find a FWD axle then.

I would not recommend getting the GSP axles. At least for me....they were utter pieces of poo.

I replaced my front axles last year and had some issues with fitment. I forget the brand axle but they were purchased from Advanced, I don't remember which vehicle I specified, either 93 SS or 94 N/A as my car is made from both. I also don't remember which knuckles are on my car, if I kept the 94 knuckles or swapped to the 93 SS knuckles when I swapped cross members and brakes, probably doesn't matter.

Either way, the axles I bought had a toothed ring pressed on the shoulder that sits within the back side of the knuckle, adjacent to the wheel bearing. I figured it was there so the axle would work in some other application so proceeded with installing. Tightening the axle nut caused the ABS gear to scrape the inside of the knuckle, leaving a lot of slack in the wheel bearing. I took it all apart again, drove the aluminum ABS gear off the axle with a chisel, re-installed and they worked fine.

So look out for axles with that built in (yet removable) ABS gear.

Nice, found a picture:
