transmission slipping, getting worse

Post by the94subaru »

Hi I did some searching on here and couldn't find exactly what I wanted to know. My auto tranny is starting to slip bad and I don't want to pay the money to rebuild one. I allways wanted a 5-speed car again ever since my first so I thought now might be a good time to swap. On a scale of 1 to 10 how hard do you think this swap is, Im pretty good with a wrench and I have a couple friends that are better. How long do you think it will take, this is my DD so It can't be down for long especially since winter is coming. thanks for all your help

it shouldnt take you that long as long as you have all the parts to do the swap. id guessing 3 to 4 hours depending if you run into problems.

i think most of the 5speed trannys hook up to all the ej blocks. i know a 91-94 turbo trany wil work if your is turbo but it should work anyways if not.
also some people think you should use the same diff as for tranny. they should be sold together.
parts needed tranny clutch master cylinder clutch slave rear diff i dont know if driveshaft diffrent are not.
grab all the clutch brake asembly pretty easy pretty quick.
as for transmisioni guess its budget and what you can find i dont know but i think id look for a hydralic clutch though. buy a new clutch. also grab the flywheel off the other block and get it re-surfaced are buy a new flywheel. note im talking about the flywheel that you got your 5mt from. i hope this helps

Every EJ tranny fits every EJ block. It's the clutches that are different. Push vs pull.

You HAVE to use the same ratio rear diff as the trans or you will get grinding and your trans won't last very long. I did it once by accident and made it about a block down the road and knew something was horribly wrong.

Hydro is best (IMO) but I believe they're only on turbo cars or maybe newer subarus.

Trans
Pedal Assembly
Clutch
Flywheel
Master Cyl (if hydro)
Slave Cyl (if hyrdo)

I think the driveshaft might be different length for auto and manual. I've never done the swap before so I don't know how much work is involved but it seems like a lot. Not something I would count on doing in one day on your first time.

You "did some searching," but you didn't look at the stickies? Read the sticky compilation thread at the very top of this very forum. The third link is Josh's extremely thorough and beautifully illustrated writeup of his Auto/FWD-to-Manual/AWD swap.

Also, in the Legacy Central Library you can find Dave's writeup of his auto-to-manual swap.

Your best bet for parts might be to see if you can buy a manual-transmission donor car for cheap. Maybe you can find one whose body is in poor condition or whose engine needs work. Your location just says "central PA" so I don't know exactly where you are, but maybe you'd be able to get a good deal on this car. It looks like he just dropped his price, so he may be open to further negotiation.

thank you for all the replys so far my car is turbo by the way. It looks like the easiest would be to find a turbo 5mt but that like a needle in a hay stack. Is there a big difference between the turbo 5mt and say an imprezza or does it have the tranny as an N/A legacy. Would I be trying to find a tranny from around the same years as the turbo 90-94 or is newer better? Don't I need wiring harness or anything like that I thought that was different. There used to be a guy on here named blackbart I got some stuff from him a while back and he lives a couple hours away from me I'm pretty sure he had a 5 speed ss at his house for parts but he hasn't been on here or answered any messages I sent him so I don't know how to get a hold of him.

Here's my write-up for the AWD & 5spd conversion. You can ignore the AWD part, and the 5spd conversion will be applicable to what you want to do.
