Dead Engine

Post by hobowagon »

Well, my wagon has finally died. I have a 93 Legacy L postal wagon. I'm looking for my swap options, and any advice from the local pros. It is an automatic, and I have thought about swapping to a manual. I'm not in a huge hurry so, I don't mind spending some time looking for the right parts.

I know its a lot of extra work and not necessarily a huge pay off but I always thought it would be awsome to swap in a twin turbo motor into a postal car. Don't know why, just thought it would be cool to own a twin turbo lego, and I see the motors on Ebay every once and a while.

Did the motor die or the transmission? Are you looking to swap in a new motor or trans...or both?

I have thought about the twin turbo, and of course I'm intrigued. I see them on Ebay constantly. I do not know which version or year model to look for. Of course depending on which engine I go for, I might have to replace the tranny anyway. From what I found, the ECU with the twin turbo usually requires a manual. I have an auto at the moment. In order to change it, I would have to get the entire front clip right? I would need the brakes, the pedals, and instrument cluster.
The motor is a boat anchor. The water pump seized and caused the engine to run hot for a time. I was cruising down the interstate at 80 for about an hour. When I stopped, I had a serious knock and grinding. It no longer has power and makes horrible noise. So the motor will be replaced, at least. Once I get all the info I need, and enough whispers in my ear. I will choose an engine, or engine/transmission to work with.

Gotcha. The twin turbo engine would be a cool swap, but quite involved. You'd need the front clip with ECU, and have to merge wiring harnesses.....it'd be a pain.

Like I said alot of work for a marginal power upgrade compaired to other swaps. From what I hear most people ditch the twin turbo set up in search of more power anyway, BUT it would be cool : ) If I was in your shoes I would go twin turbo but I am a glutin for punishment lol.

So, the twin turbo is a pain. Then again so will the single turbo from what I'm hearing. Any upgrade in power would be appreciated. The pain for me would be finding a shop that can handle the swap. Up north, there are many places that are Subie pros, in the south, early Legos are seriously hard to find.

What version of the ej20 turbo and twin turbo should I look for? Not having the vented hood, would make me want to go with a FMIC. How does that work for the twin?

The twin turbo will be tight around the steering box etc. You will need a turbo cross member or notch your existing one. The wiring , If you have never done it before will make you want to repeatedly strike your head against a hard solid object. I just did this on my sons 92 Legacy, with a 94 JDM GC8 swap. Do your research in advance and get the ECU pin outs for both engines and do your homework. Make notes and draw diagrams for the wires in the harness you will need to either relocate, add or even remove.
