I just got my car to start and drive around finally. This is my second rebuild on it, once for a piston blowing a hole into itself and the second for a spun bearing. I have a few questions:
1) I have Wiseco Pistons and Eagle rods now, are they just normally loud? Its loud on a cold start and quiets down a bit but the engine is definitely louder.
2) I am breaking it in still and have made it see any boost, I did the 5-10x 30-50mph thing how long do you guys do this, 1000 miles?
3) It dumps big cloud of smoke on start up but it goes away after about 5 sec and doesn't constantly do this, could this be turbo? Or IACV? I had the heads rebuilt and but new seals in last year on the first rebuild, could they have gone bad sitting in the garage or when I cleaned them at work?
4) There is oil on my down pipe and all over behind the turbo but I can't pinpoint the location of a leak almost seems like its in the smoke and spreads it all over, I also have oil in my intake, could too much oil cause this or bad valve seals? Dip stick shows a lot and I going to do an oil change to make sure the right amount is in there.
5) I just have an aftermarket WRX 3in down pipe ope right now. has anyone else done this? Did your rattle like the dickens. Will plumbing it out the side help or should I run it straight out the back? Stay 3in? or make it smaller?
Sorry so many questions Thank you all in advance

sounds like everything was done right. might just be effects of the break in. as far as the oil, sounds like major blow by. you might want to get a catch can. chances are your oil rings are still breaking in so they arent getting a tight seal on the cylinder walls. that would explain smoke on start up, oil that sits in the combustion chamber is getting burned out. a break in should be roughly 1000-2000 miles.

I know forged internals tend to be louder due to the lack of expansion like cast pistons do but don't have any first hand experience with forged pistons. Did you install everything yourself and did you have a shop machine the cylinders for the pistons you have? Also, what kind of shape is your turbo in? The oil could be coming from the turbo.

Assembly was me. Shop bored cylinders and gaped the rings and matched them to each cylinder turbo seemed fine to me. Way to test?

When you put in the pistons, did you make sure the oil control ring gaps were at the top part of the piston? If not, that could be a cause of the oil on start up. What gap did they set on the pistons....everything stock according to the Wiseco spec sheet?
The forged internals are a little louder, and depedning on the clearances, some tend to be a little louder than others.
You may want to check the turbo to see if it's the cause of the oil leak. What you described in the down pipe is too much for just standard blow by or even the oil control ring gap being on the bottom.
As for the break in, try to do as much of the high vacuum decel runs as possible within the first 1,000 miles. Vary engine speed, load, etc.

Ok. I am pretty sure all the rings were installed right i checked over and over. Not sure the gap they set it to but i was told it was to Wiseco specs.
I did an oil change on it last night and got a lot out of it. Filled up a big oil jug and a bit of another so thats over 4.2. I also cleaned the firewall and dp. This morning was way less smoke and really no drips.
High vacuum decel meaning the 30-50 accell and let it decel in gear to 30?
Best way to check turbo?

Make sure that your PCV & Coolant system are connected correctly, on my car they were both hooked up incorrectly and i would dump smoke. just a thought though.
