Design advise needed

Post by Binford »

I'm building a custom mechanics toolbox (didn't see that coning did you! ) and would like some aesthetic design opinions. lol

First off I *probably* will be starting a new job that will require me to have my own toolbox full of tools. I really don't want to roll my 10 year old Craftsman box next to the Snap On boxes. Plus that would mean I have no toolbox in MY shop! lol

I also do not want to spend the money on a $4000 toolbox, even if it is just $15/week or whatever they tell you Hahaha! So, after looking around at what I had on hand, I started fabbing up a box!

This is the main piece I started with

This is what it currently looks like

I think it's coming along nicely so far! Only thing I've bought so far were the wheels. $72 for 5" "toolbox" casters. As long as the drawers turn out nicely it should be a quality box! Which is what I need help on.

I've got several ideas for drawers, but I'd like to ask specifically about one. Going along with the whole "re-purposing" idea I'm thinking of salvaging some filing cabinet drawers and re-working them to be wider and differing heights; you know, like a toolbox! I could utilize the rollers as they are pretty heavy duty. But the face is where things get tricky, at least to make it look good.

I want make wooden faced drawers. But I don't know what kind of wood, or what color to paint the box. I don't want it to end up looking like an oak dresser!

I found this cool custom wooden toolbox (halfway down the page)

Also, if you know me on Facebook, please don't mention this there! Nobody knows what it is yet!

After looking more closely at a filing cabinet, I've decided against using the rollers, and going with my original idea of 20" double ball bearing drawer glides for $10 a pair. I'm thinking angle iron frame with the wood front, and some kind of sheet steel bottom. Way overkill, but I like it! :D

Still want any and all opinions please! Thanks!

sounds like a great idea can't wait to see more pics!
I personally couldn't use wood as it will end up getting chipped or gouged.

Honestly, if you're dealing with wood, I'd suggest contacting Douglas Vincent. He does custom woodworking as his business and may be able to give you some pointers/suggestions.
