Turbos?

Post by J-MoNeY »

I have no idea what you guys are talking about with your 16's and Vf stuff. I need some one to give me a rundown on what kind of turbos the EJ22T's have in them, and what kind and what are the turbos names of the kind of turbos that will fit on to our cars.

EJ22T = IHI VF11 with RHB5 turbine housing

WRX & STI 93-96 = Mitsubishi TD05-16G with a similar housing and 90° intake elbow as the VF11

WRX USDM = Mitsu. TD04-13G.. similar housing, no 90° intake elbow

STI 97 + = IHI VF ... 24 - 28, also aftermarket IHI turbos.. similar housing, no 90° elbow

Worth noting also is that the turbos are clocked differently. The compressor outlet of the EJ22T's VF11 comes up at an angle about 45 degrees between the horizontal and vertical. From what I gather, all the others come up almost horizontal, maybe 10 degrees up.

yup, all the other turbos output is horizontal. VF11 is 45°.

but if you put a TD05 or other turbo, you ABSOLUTELY WANT to install an intercooler, so the horizontal output will match perfect with the intercooler input piping.

So do you think a 16-g would be the best turbo for the money. I want to look at around 300 WHP.

the ihi vf23 is also a very nice turbo for the money. they are ballberring and will support up to 20 psi on your ej22t. I make full boost at 2500 rpm. they seem to be going for around 750 new.

left over will be the std RS engine, water/air cooler, gearbox with 3.9 diff, VF12, standard exhaust headers, standard RS computer with chiptorque chip, actually now that I think about it pretty much everything is going to be swapped

Would you be interested in letting that a/w intercooler go and the associated plumbing?

Now that I think about it, you'll probably have two a/w intercoolers at your disposal, since you'll most likely be using that front mount!!

I'll only have the one water/air cooler but I think it will go with the engine, there are plenty of people chasing complete setups for brumby utes and alike

That BRAT is insane! What I wouldn't give for a similarly treated 2-door GL hardtop!

Well, could it be a VF28? I can't remember which version WRX/STI got it though.

A ha! The VF28 is from the Ver. 5 STI. It's pretty much a VF24.

Found another interesting one

SPEC-VF28507, SERIAL#- RHB51820A, PART#-14412AA002

I can tell its a subaru turbo from the part number. Subaruparts lists it as "Pt500291 Turbo Charg" with replacement part number 14412AA032

There's a lot more out there too. I just did a search on Google for IHI VF28.

You guys are sure its not just a coincidence that the numbers say vf28xxx ? These are surely vf28 turbos?

Would this be a VF26 then?

That looks like a VF8 off a GL turbo or something. See how it only has 4 bolts for the DP instead of 5.

Ya, I think both of those are off old GL turbo's or XT turbo's ect... That second one also only has the old 4 bolt pattern for the DP. They are probably old VF8's or whatever.

How soon I forget that! So all three of these turbos are probably from the older generation, meaning 1.8 liter engines and low boost.
