going from fwd to awd. what use? any tips

Post by dafrompa »

So I have fwd legacy and want to go awd because i am looking at going turbo and don't know well the fwd trans will hold up and don't how i would build one up to handle the power that i want. Well my friend has a 2002 legacy transmisson and rear diff that he is going to sale me for a good price. I was woundering what drive shafts will work? Do I have go with a SS legacy or will a second gen one work. My next question is what rear suspension bracket should I use for the rear? I was thinking about trying to get an SS which will be hard but then I thought N/A and then I look at wife second gen and thought to my self that might work too and their a lot of GT legacy that I see in the juck yard were I am at and that might be just as good as the SS.

Have you looked at my swap write-up?

Dave also has one too

The FWD trans will actually hold up better than the AWD trans. This is because the AWD components put more stresses on the gears, box, etc. The FWD doesn't have those added stresses. Obviously your traction will be much better with the AWD trans. So if you are only going to AWD because of the turbo upgrade.....I wouldn't bother.

The non-turbo Legacy suspension & drivetrain components will work for the AWD swap. Some of the 2nd gen legacy stuff will work. I seem to recall the driveline may not work. There's also some differences between how the rear diff mounts up, but that's not a big deal.

Wow now I have more to think about. I do kind of miss my awd. I've had 3 other subaru that were awd and my wife's subaru is awd and this is my only fwd subaru I've owned. I do miss my traction I had but I kind of like the power I feel out of my fwd. Since i already have 5 speed I wouldn't have to do that much to the wiring change would I? The things I can think of is the maybe the plug connection on the trasmisson for the revesers lights ext.. and adding the extra fuel pump, what do you think I would have do their? The only reason I was going to go with this is because of tryin push my car to about 250-275hp and the trans out of the 2002 legacy is the same as a wrx the only thing diffrent is 1 and 2 gear but since hearing that now I have to think about what I want to do a little more.

In doing the AWD part of the swap, there's really no wiring difference. The sub pump is a venturi pump and the existing fuel pump connector plugs right up. Same with the reverse & neutral switch on the MT. So really it's just your decision to go AWD or stay FWD.
