95 legacy trans into 91 legacy 4eat

so i know ive done this swap before and dont recall any problems.. i found a trashed 95 legacy sedan with good motor and auto trans and drove the car before i pulled it apart..

installed the auto trans into my 91 wagon and have no problems other than "AT oil temp light on" ... runs and drives, shifts nice!! installing the 95 tcu didnt seem to help, but maybe i need to disconnect battery when i do that??

the "AT oil temp light" comes on and stays on right away when cold or warm..

i couldnt find much talk about this problem so i would appreciate some help

also would it matter if i got the oil cooler lines backwards???

This is a good opportunity to see if the '95, which is OBD2/OBDII is compatible or not w/the OBD1 '91.

Does the AT light come on when the key is ON - Car OFF?

Light comes on and stays on? Did you try pulling the TCU codes anyway?


You're referring to the cooler lines on the radiator, correct? Not an add-on coolder? I think there is a check-valve in the ATF cooler lines, but that may be for the TC - sorry - not sure on that.

When you did this before what year was the donor vs. the recipient?

And, yes for those that may ask they are both 4.11 FD ratio.

i know i did this swap before and it was before i was more eduacted..

i did it in a gen 1 legacy and pulled trans from gen 3.. 95 thru 98ish wagon and i didnt have any troubles at all.. perhaps luck was on my side???

ive been driving this car to work and it seems great no problems.... so i just wonder if i got a bad sensor and if i do is it easy to get to??

i had the power light flash at me once.. but im pretty sure it was because my speedo cable was broken.. put in new speedo cable and no power light flashing at all.. so i havnt ran codes on the trans..

i thought there was only codes when power light flashes...??
