I would like to put in a phase II 2.5, but I don't know if I can do that without some rewiring? I would like to use the old Trottle body and hopfully hook it up to a 2.5 block and manifold. Is the idle plate the only thing that needs to be modified? Will it run with old exhaust and wiring?
The Phase I block is totaly out of the question, I don't like the way it performs and the reliability issues.
If I can't easily get a 2.5 into there, then which of the newer 2.2 n/a motors could I plug right in without modification? There were four different engines made, with the newer ones having higher compression ratio producing 15 more horses and 15 more lbs of torque. How high up the evolutionary ladder could I climb without running into difficulties? I'm very bugeted on this project, so switching over to turbo is out of the question. Unless someone wants to trade their turbo leg for my car!
I dunno exactly how much a phaseII 2.5 swap would be but i can't see if being any more than an ej22t swap, also I don't see why you would want to swap to another 2.2 n/a for what it would cost to swap in a newer 2.2 you could get more than 15 hp/torque, and if not you could have much better suspension/drivetrain/whatever or just save up for an ej22t. Besides the second gen legs were notorious for head gasket problems.

The 2.2t would cost more not because of the actual cost of the engine, but the extra labor I would have to hire to get through the rewiring. I just wanted to confirm if the phase2 2.5 would be a simple fit.
BTW, I'm not looking to get as much HP as possible, I just want to eventually replace my old worn engine. I want more HP if I can get it reliably and at the same cost and effort.
I'm fairly sure but all wiring stays the same from our na ej22's going to a ej22t swap You might have to add a few wires but I'm not 100% on that someone else can confirm that. If you just want a better/stronger/more reliable/whatever engine, just go with the 22t shortblock(though you might need the heads too, dunno about all that stuff though). Most anyone will tell you it's the strongest block built by subaru. If you cant be swayed from the 2.5 i believe it'll fit in there, like most any other ej car

Wiring in an EJ22T is easy. A handful of extra wires and two switched wires.
Look for a thread called "wiring the swap" or something like that. mTk and I worked it all out and it's running in his car.
If you wanted to do an EJ25 swap correctly, you'd need to use the EJ25 ECU. That would be a huge pain, as the ECU wiring is completely different.
If you wanted to run the EJ25 off your stock EJ22 ECU, that might or might not work... At some point Subaru switched to a different cam and crank sensor setup, and if the phase II EJ25 uses that new setup, you won't be able to use your stock ECU. Otherwise, it might run, but it's not a good solution since it's the wrong ECU. Other potential issues might be idle control and EGR.
I say go for the EJ22T swap. It's very straightforward from every point of view.

So, the 22t can run off of my ECU? How's that? Doesn't there need to be boost managment?
I thought the 22t would be too much hassle, but if I can get it into there with little problems, then 22t all the way baby!
Another thing, I'm not about to go out and get a new tranny too. How will my 4EAT hold up to the 22t considering I treat it nice? I don't expect to be upgrading the 22t any more than a larger exhaust, or is that even needed?
Also, isn't the 22t hard to find? Isn't it pretty expensive too?

Oh... No. The EJ22T won't run right with the NA ECU (boost control is only one of the issues). What I meant was that the EJ22T ECU would be very easy to wire into your car, and you might be able to get the ECU with the engine.
But an EJ25 wouldn't run right with just your stock ECU either.

I've never done a swap personally, but I would say it would probably be the easiest engine aside from another non-turbo EJ22 to swap in. The one thing it would need that another swap wouldn't need, though, is a turbo crossmember.

I don't know, since I haven't gone looking... I do know QuickDrive was gauging interest on one in the Parts Shed forum not too long ago.

I got mine with 86k miles, turbo, & exhaust incl. for $750. And I know of another one (sans turbo and possibly damaged exhaust) for $500. Try a google junk yard search. I'd say get 'em while you can as everyone's figuring out how great these things are and it'll likely drive up prices.
As a note, these things are pretty light - I transported it back about three hours from Maine in the wagon it's going into and the back suspension didn't even sag.
