Use the VSS from a later-model car. At some point they switched to a VSS that just threads right into the transmission where the speedometer cable would otherwise go. You can connect that sensor directly to the ECU.

is the wrx speed sensor in the tranny just one wire?
and all ill have to do is connect the speed sensor wire to the B58.11 wire on the ecu and ill be good to go?

On my 99 Impreza it's three wires -- one goes to +12v, one goes to ground, and the third one goes to the ECU. So you'd have to connect the sensor to power and ground and then the third wire would go to B58.11.

Won't have to filter the signal or anything?

That is great news actually since I have my old WRX transmission sitting in a garage and I don't really want to use the stock cluster in my rally car either. Just need to go snag that VSS plug off the old transmission.

No, the signal should be just fine to connect directly to the ECU. It's the same signal the stock VSS supplies, except the stock VSS is in the speedometer body instead of in this little stub piece.
