axle shafts and a funny noise?

Post by Aaron's ej22t »

my car is making a funny noise when i accelerate and when i decel as well. it is a clunking humming sounding. the motor is fine, the tranny is fine and i just switched to mobil 1 sythetic gear oil. i believe it is the axle shafts, cause i replaced the boots about 5,000 miles ago and re-greased the joint, although, the previous owner probably ran the car for about 15,000 miles with torn boots. i bought it with 101k and it has 107k now.

can i buy brand new axle shafts? how much?
cause i would rather not get re-manned ones, i heard they are not that great and only last a year or two at most. i plan on keeping my car and making more power, so i feel new ones are my best bet.

any info/experience will help, thanks guys! :o

I got a half-axle replaced by the local mechanic for $70 in new parts and $60 in labor (the old one had to be sent back to avoid a core charge). Considering how cheap it was, I figured it wasn't worth busting my butt to do it myself.

It's not too tough to DIY. I just did one last week and have another to do tomorrow. It was pretty damn easy once you figure it all out. I can provide some help if you're considering doing it yourself.

are talking about rebuilding them yourself?

i know how to install them, i just couldn't decide if new axle shafts were worth it over re-manned ones. :o

I've heard you can't even get new ones anymore. That could be totally false, it's just what someone told me. I'm sure the re-man'd ones are fine, at least I hope so because I've got two of 'em on my car now.

At my job, I haven't seen one new axle ever come in, they're all reman'd...

Did it sound at all like something metal dragging against something else? I just got that when I went out this evening (or is it morning now?). It sounded like my brakes were dragging, but it didn't feel like they were dragging. I also played around with the parking brake, just to make sure. This just started... Something else for my list of things that need fixing...

I'm going to keep looking here for any other possibilities... :(

Forgot to mention: I didn't pull the parking brake on when I parked it yesterday. Haven't found anything yet

no, you can hear a whirring/humming sound when a engine has a load on it (say 2nd gear at 3k rpm) but when i take off in first it clunks when the power is delivered to the wheels.

also, when i cruise at highway speeds(70mph) there is a humming sound and when i hear the clunking sound and then press the clutch in, it goes away.
any ideas?
wheel bearings? cv joints? axle shafts? some part in the drivetrain?

While mine doesn't sound like yours, mine is being looked at by a mechanic. I'll let you know what I find out about mine.
