Rattle Noise?

Post by Tommio RS »

Hi everyone! I dont know where to acctually put this thread because its odd and i cant place its where abouts.

Here is the "rattle noise" My car is an auto aswell.

It only makes noise when its below -5.
It only makes noise when the car is NOT moving in again gear.
It only happens between idle and 1800rpms. I cant hear it after that. My TBE is to loud.
It will go away when the car is hot and been driving for some time.
It sounds EXACTLY like a heat shield noise but i have none left aside some the uppipe one.
Its not lifters because it know that noise and i have it! LOL

I did install a AWIC and a turbo into my car then it happened when it became cold outside...

Any thought would be great.

Thanks

Tom

Tom,

It may be the heat shields on the up-pipe, or it could be something on the chassis itself that is just vibrating when it's so cold. Unfortunately, I think it'll be tough to track down the rattle.

You know now that you meantion it... There might be a dam hose clamp on my front sub frame. I think i drop one when swapping the turbo. And it could also be very possiable that the uppipe shields are gone.

I look in to it soon as i can.

Another possibility that comes to mind is a cracked flexplate.

You would likely notice an exhaust leak if the flex pipe was cracked.

Flexplate, not flexpipe.

Well i know its not an exhaust leak. You can hardly even tell that the car is running when its idling with the hood down.

I've had a similar rattle noise forever, and the rusty heat shields have long since been discarded. It only happens randomly when the car is idling, and I can't hear it unless I'm at parking-lot speed with the windows open normally. But from outside the car, it's apparent most times at low rpm (idle-ish).

I'm convinced it's something internal to the catalytic converter. Maybe from build-up of moisture that can settle in the cat and start to rust something in there, from the inside out.

This engine I'm talking about is out of the car right now and it surely isn't a cracked flexplate. Everything on this motor is really solid, minus a few of the usual suspect leaks (hey, 186k miles ain't bad for a few minor leaks like original cam seals and the plastic oil separator plate on the rear of the case)

Previously, the exhaust gaskets were replaced and I used RTV plus new bolts - and it's an N/A car so real simple to find an exhaust leak.
