heads for ej22t

Post by Subiman91ss »

i have a 91 turbo leg.. im interested in knowing if i can use 99 leagacy n/a heads on my turbo??

Im also interested in knowing what could be done to the stock EJ22T heads, i have a set sitting in my garage.

Im looking to run a stock ecu and injectors, stock turbo with 98 leg TMIC.. This is my mountain car and Im wanting to help this thing breath. Im planning on doing head-gaskets some time this summer.

You won't be able to use the 99 heads with the turbo legacy intake manifold, plus I don't know what changes the heads may do to the compression ratio.

If you want to help the engine breathe better, the best bang for your buck is a set of 220 grind delta cams. You can p&p the heads, but unless you're looking for excess of 300 - 350 hp, I wouldn't bother. There are better things to spend your money on, like a better turbo.

You will find that the stock EM, MAF, & injectors are very close to their limit. The stock turbo at 11-12 psi with a few bolt on mods will max out the MAF which causes the injectors to go static. Unfortunately, Subaru did not give us much room for modifications with the stock EM.

Also, when you do the head gaskets, get the heads resurfaced. Are you planning to split the block?

Hi,
'99 Legacy had 2 engines -Phase 2, EJ22- SOHC - in the regular Legacy L, and the EJ25D - DOHC which was a Phase 2 block w/the same Phase 1 heads as the '97-98, that came in the Legacy Outback and GT. The EJ25D heads are a common upgrade. Do some research on here about them.

As stated by JC, using the '99 Heads will be a PITA.

Also, what is a "98 leg TMIC"? JDM version?

well i have been reading about the EJ22 n/a motor and found out that they did make a phase 2 SOHC, but i think the intake would have to be changed and thats enough to make me bail on this idea... the main reason i was thinking about changing is they said they changed the valve angles in 99, but they mentioned the intake changed in 97

Im not sure what JDM means but the TMIC i bought off e-bay and the guy said its a stock 98 outback.

JDM= Japanese Domestic Market
'98 Outbacks in the US didn't have a TMIC= Top Mount Intercooler, that's why I asked if it's from Japan. I don't 'think' there was a turbo Outback anywhere (until the '05 XT) - just the twin-turbo Legacy/Liberty models, from ~'94-'99??

RU maybe referring to the Hood Scoop on the Outback?

EDM and USDM are incorrect terms. The only domestic market for a Japanese car company is Japan.

thanks for the info guys about JDM..

I have found out that the TMIC is off of a 05, its NOT a wrx/sti version but the short, wide one from the outback.

Im not sure what your talking about, referring to the hood scoop comment? clearify
