AC/HEAT does not turn on/blow anything, no lights either

Post by SaltyBeefCubes »

Hi guys. New to the forum (been a HUUUUGE lurker for a number of months) thought I'd finally join when browsing the search hasn't helped me any either.

I guess I'll get straight to the point.

I own a 90 Legacy LS Wagon and a 92 L Sedan both FWD.

On my wagon the heat and air do not blow. I mean literally when i turn on the heat NOTHING happens. No noise, no fans, just plain nothing. Same with the AC, the compressor does not turn on, the fans do not push air out the vents, nothing. The car remains quite. I'm assuming it's electrical because the green lights that go onto the HVAC control also do not light up. I remember seeing somewhere about being able to pull out the HVAC unit, but I remember that was for a guy that had intermittent problems (where as mine is completely shut down and non functional). ANY advice or threads that can be sent my way would be AWESOME. I've also got a tranny to pull and a sunroof to figure out for (I got the car for $400) so I've got my work cut out for me. THANKS!!!!

if no fuses are blown then
pull the glove box out and try replacing the fan resistor block its plugged in right behind the glove box and its got 2 screws holding it in place

Welcome to the BBS.

If the green lights on the HVAC buttons do not light up, I would suspect the HVAC unit itself, rather than the blower resistor pack or motor.

Check all the fuses and relays, if they're all good, you'll need to pull the HVAC control unit out. You'll need to remove the dash trim. You have to remove the steering wheel or remove the two bolts that hold it to the dash so the column lowers a little bit so the trim piece will come out. With that removed, you should be able to get at the HVAC unit for further testing or to replace it.

Yes! Thank you for this response! I jumped the blower motor and it worked fine, i also tested the resistor switch and it was fine. I have tried for like 3 hours (I wish I was kidding) to locate the blower motor relay to no avail. So I moved to the hvac controls. But I cannot get it out even after removing the trim. I'm praying that the controls need to be re soldered so I don't have to go hunt for the relay. Is there a write up to remove the hvac controls?

Have you removed the entire trim that goes around the gauge cluster?

Here are some pictures of the control unit removal.

Okay I got it out! Wanted to give a huge thanks for everyone helping me! It turned out the solders at the power connected were blown (as advised earlier) I re soldered them and the air started to blow. SUCH A RELIEF! I Already love this forum so much haha. I now begin the diagnosis of the sunroof.
