Third Gear Gone -- now what

Post by LegyC-LegyDO »

The synchros were goign bad --- 2nd and 3rd ground --- 1,000 miles ago, I could barely get it to go into gear one day climbing a hill, then it worked fine after a fluid change.

This happened all at once while I was cruising in third gear down a windy paved road -- let off the throttle at about 3500 rpm and all hell broke loose. .

It completely smoothed it off

Now, I put it in third and rev up and it sounds just like I'm in neutral.

It all a real drag considering I just put in a new alternator, replaced injectors, custom fabed my 07 TMIC Y pipe to turbo, installed all new silicone hosing -- cut out the cat and installed a 2 1/2 magana flow .... sigh

I was just starting to have fun.

SHOULD I rebuild?

SHOULD I find used 5mt from a 91-94 ss

or

WHAT OTHER types of subaru tranny's will bolt in to the ej22T

IF i need to get a 4.11 diff, so be it.

I'd appreciate any advice

Im real bummed

Your cheapest route will probably be to find another transmission to swap in. There are other MT's, Legacy and Imprezas that have a 3.9 final drive ratio, you'd just have to do some digging to find one that is setup for a hydraulic clutch setup.

Yeah, that's what I'm figuring out. What's a good/stronger upgrade from the stock transmission in the 91 Legacy SS. From what I've read, the synchros are destined to fail in them.

There really isn't any "stronger" upgrade. The newer transmissions had better synchro designs, but a lot depends on how the transmission/shifting is treated.

I vote converting to a push clutch 5 speed. They are a dime a dozen.

I'd try to find a 98-01 RS 5-speed with the hydraulic clutch and the matching rear LSD diff. You'll see a big improvement in acceleration.
