Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
so I ordered this......

it was the cheapest y pipe around and strangely enough, from the look of it, might be the easiest one to make work with the old school turbo setup...we shall see.
I also bought about 17 cans of satin black, some primer, sand paper, tape some grinding wheels etc...hoping to get to work prepping the body for some filler. Sadly I am missing one piece of trim in between the rear door and rear wheel well...just the plastic "stripe" down the side, still bothers me I am missing it on one side though.
hopefully I can get some work done tomorrow.

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
that's how it comes..with the silicone piece and all, someone makes this as a y pipe for the 02-07 wrx. It was $30 shipped http://www.speedyracer.com/Subaru-Impre ... pipe-02-07
i'll let you know how it works out with the TMIC, from the looks of it should be allot easier than hacking up a samco y pipe...
Well today i sent back the NA legacy rad and ordered one for $10 more from rockauto...should have just done that in the first place. After I got back I started attacking some of the rust on the wheel wells and rocker panels. the wheel wells are really badly rusted, the rocker panel on the driver side gets really bad where it meets the rear wheel well also... on the passenger side it looks like someone tried to bondo it, not a terrible job but not really great either. I chipped away some serious spots near where the rear bump mounts, some decent holes on either side now, needs to be filled with some body filler, maybe apply some fiberglass cast stuff to reform the ridge on the wheel wells and bondo it all together, maybe it will look ok after that. For now I just washed it and sprayed some rust reformer to keep it form rusting after exposing some bare metal. I'll really get going on that once I get a nice warm day off. I'll also try and get some pics of those rot holes too...it seems to be a common legacy thing

I wish people would stop advertising those y-pipes as 02-07, especially that one! I'm sure it's just for the 02-05 intercooler, but not a bad price though.

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
Today was a bust, sure it was nice enough out but my 3 year old was all ADD today. I kept having to stop and come up with activities for her to do in the backyard. Anyway here is what I did get done.
exposed the rust for what it really is

the rocker panel is nearly gone towards the end of it, but the rust stops so it isn't completely gone

it was dark and on a cell phone so excuse the crappy pics, but I only able to patch the one hole near the green tape, it filled it really well, I need to sand it down obviously but I had to quit today b/c I was getting nowhere today....HOPEFULLY next time I have a nice day off it won't be windy and i'll have a sitter lol

wow haha you can't see shit in the "after" picture haha, I assure you it looks better than that.....anyway I was actually anything I can do for this rocker panel, the little plastic end cap is held on by one clip the other is just floating. I was thinking either be ghetto and rivet in some metal Rocker panels of my own creation or, if I could find just the dog leg or a wheel arch and stick that on there....anyone know of a place to get repair panels?

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
Ok well I was getting ready to cut up this piece of flash to make a wheel arch when fedex came with my radiator

holy shit it is the correct radiator!!

all buttoned up
So I installed that and put all the hoses on and put some water in the resovoir and tried to start it...nothin won't even turn over. So I check all the regular things..I notice the ground on the pitch mount to the firewall was broken, so I made a new one and put it back, still won't start but now the light for the gear select is on the dash showing that it was in park.
Everything looks correct and I haven't touched anything really hooked up to anything that would stop it from starting....it is acting like when you try to start It from drive or reverse.
anyone know where it goes?? This hose is in the top of the trans and goes nowhere....is this a vent or should this be connected somewhere? I can't imagine this would cause any problems with starting

it is right near the downpipe and that connector for the trans
for now I will get back to the body work until I think or something...

Ok n/m I guess the auto trans has 2 vent hoses at the top of the case...so today after work I am going to fill the radiator up and hopefully be able to drive it somewhere where I can get it on jack stands and finish bodywork and paint

Time for some wheel wells! I got one of these

and cut it into the shape of the wheel arch

it it was pretty easy to shape to the original size of the wheel arch

I didn't take any pics after this b/c I was movin along and didn't want to stop, plus it was getting dark. Basically I cut them to "height" in accordance to where the metal was missing and then jb welded it in place. Not time for any body filler today but the driver's side is nearly done

still not sure what way to go at this rocker panel...probably some metal and fiberglass cloth....i'll figure it out though

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
man it pisses me off not being able to just finish this and paint, I did get to paint the trunk though, at least one coat of bas after sanding and primer...but to give you an idea of what little free time I have, in order to just get this trunk to have a coat of paint I had to prep it at work, sand it all down and wash it at a carwash self service place...drive home and do the rest. Even that I was only able to do b/c I had it on my porch so I could just step outside, spray/sand it and go back inside...major PITA not being able to sink some time into this. But anyways....some pics
got to work...while at work...lol

sanded down all nice nice, right down to the plastic on the spoiler

guess I forgot to snag a picture of it with just primer and after I painted it with a coat...but here are some brakelines lol

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
rust is all patched up now, filed it down some today, hopefully I will be doing the body filler soon, then paint...gotta move it first though, otherwise i'll paint it and birds will shit all over it...so first thing is first..I need to get it started

Got to paint the trunk some more today, also pulled the grille off and painted that, might end up doing the same with the fenders as well. I also took the liberty of scraping the paint off the badge to make my own custom pink badge seeing how I couldn't find an aftermarket legacy badge.

need some chrome paint and some pink paint
trunk has about 2 coats right here

does anyone know where to get the trunk emblems? I couldn't find a place

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
got it started today and filled it with coolant, took a quick ride around the block and man are the brakes fucked lol, also sounds like i is going to need some wheel bearings, and also the gas thank release is broken, you gotta pry it open with ..well whatever you got lol. Also put my fingers though a nice hole in the floorboards. Probably going to be looking for a shell after little while, this one is pretty bad once you really look at it.
I am starting school one monday so hopefully I can get this thing roadworthy and get a good look at it on the life @ school...then I can REALLY see what I am working with. After seeing the hole in the floor, I am not going to both doing the other wheel well. Someone already attacked it with some bondo, it was a shitty job they did and i'd like to re-do it but after seeing more rust I am not getting too carried away here...I can find a clean NA legacy shell for cheap around here and swap all the goodies over.
Feels good to get it started again after not being able to for a while, all because the plastic retainer broke one of the trans harnesses, here is the little bastard

the turbo still smokes once it gets hot but there doesn't appear to be any leaks, maybe it is just all the oil/dirt on the cool side...you know how dirty those turbos get. The brakes are basically useless and there are all sorts of noises and stuff, a lot of work to do here, but if it turns out to be too rusty to build on I am not replacing anything until I get a new shell...we shall see

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
Today I decided it was time to get this emblem done, I just wanted to see how it was going to look in the grille really and couldn't do much else b/c it had rained today

got it all taped up and sanded down.
went to walmart to get some paint and saw this

back to the house with the paint

then I got busy with some metalic silver (no chrome paint @ walyworld)

then I sanded the paint off the face of the emblem
the correct color pink being applied here....took forever to finally dry

here is the end product...not too shabby

all in all it didn't really take that long, would have taken less if I never scarped the chrome off the emblem in the first place, but oh well it still came out very nice

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
finally found a small amount of time to get my brakes done, had to hold off on doing the lines and painting the calipers though. I was very short on time and need this thing roadworthy by the end of the week or I have to pay for the F150 for another month worth of insurance.
everything went very smoothly until I got to the last rotor, this thing was stuck worse than any rotor I have EVER done. so bad I broke bolts off in the 2 holes used to remove it, and hitting it with a sledge only served to break the rotor, with the barrel STILL STUCK to the hub!!!

a little more violence and they came off

now a custom 2 piece rotor lol
new rotors in place

the calipers were all pretty tight compressing them, borderline seized....so I am going to get new calipers all around, how are the factory calipers anyway? Is it worth an upgrade? will 4pot/2pots fit these rotors?? All in all all new setup will only cost $154 not too bad after I send the cores back.
At least if I get some new rotors the paint will take to them really nicely, I already bought the rotors so if no calipers will fit on these rotors I am sticking with the SS brakes. I am planning on putting some lettering on the legacy calipers if it looks nice. Maybe something along the lines of:
these color letters on a black caliper
LEGACY
SS
These would of course be centered, you can imagine it I'm sure

Wow, that's pretty bad the rotor split! I did some many years ago that I had to take a torch to them to get them off. I beat on them with a sledge and still no go.
The 4pots/2pots won't fit on the turbo legacy rotors. The 4/2 pots use larger rotors.

Re: Xise's 1993 Legacy Turbo
Yeah the rotors are on the small side, the factory brakes will have to do, but the are all leaky and the pistons are rusted to shit so I am going new all around....it's cheap enough so no big deal.
Anyways got a bit more sanding down done, I sanded the surface on the wheel arch even with the rear door, ready for some bondo now...my daughter helped me out a bit too lol

I still need to do the other side and a few fiberglass patches are needed underneath, the rocker panels are pretty toasted....this is probably going to end up being a shell until I can grab an unrusty legacy somewhere and swap over the goods.
