coolant leak while idling?

Post by Dizzy »

Gang -

If I let my 93 turbo idle for longer than normal (~10 min), I get a small puddle of coolant (between the size of a quarter and half-dollar) under the passenger side bank of cylinders, towards the front of the engine.

My guess is the water pump, but I'm wondering why it only does it when the car is idling. Any input would be welcome. TIA.

you sure it's from the engine.

check the front portion of the plastic end cap on the passenger side. it's a common point of failure.

aluminum radiators typically have plastic end caps on them that are clamped on to the aluminum part.

Over the many heat cylces that occur, a small crack can form and leak coolant....my car had this same issue......I'll try and find a pic of it...assuming i took one.

Huh. I thought it was on the passenger side on the EJ22t. Oh, well.

If your upper radiator hose clamp is loose it will drip collant down to the timing belt cover which will sneak around and look as if its coming from the bottom of the engine. Id check this first.

here's a pic of the radiator. the place that often cracks that josh was talking about is the part outlined in red. you can see that i put JB weld on mine and it worked for about a year and a half. but if i were you i would just get a new radiator if it is cracked.

Thanks for the pic. I'm gonna be pissed if I have to get a new radiator. It looks like the alternator may be on it's way out, too. I'm only getting ~12v from the battery terminals with the car running.

grr...
