Swap complete -pics-

Post by Flatfourced »

I finally finished the ej22t into 97 obw.

I am happy to say it went off without a hitch. I got to keep my power steering pump and alternator from the ej25d. I ended up notching the xmember because i lost a day of build time to rain and after a better look at my front end i'm going to need bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends.. the works, so i am going to add the turbo xmember with a front end refresh soon.

The ecu worked fine as planed, i kept the ej25d harness in place, taped into the cel, fans, fuel pump, and tach wires, and ran the harness from the 91 legacy i cut out.

The idle is low sometimes, but it was expected and very tolerable.. it has only died twice in 300 miles due to this.

So, if anyone is curious as to the difference in power on this swap.. it's phenominal! the overall power is very noticeable but the thing i didnt get untill i felt it was the torque! This thing can lug 3 times better than before.. i can go up a 20% grade at 40mph in 5th and not break a sweat. That compaired to the top end only ej25..

But yea it's alot faster and just better to drive..

On with the pics!

Cool. Looks like you have loose wiring right above your downpipe. I would move that if you haven't already. Stock VF11 turbo? Those cars look like they are turbo already with that hood scoop. It was meant to be.

Thanks! I felt the same way about the scoop. it's the xt model that should have been

Yea there is alot of tlc to be done, the harness still needs loom and heat tape there. I tried to leave the old harness as undisturbed as possible. In the event i had to reinstall the old motor. So it's a mess

But now that i am satisfied the 22t isnt going to take spit and die on me. I can go to triming the harness and the rest of the overwhelming list of things to do lol..

If the ej25d sells soon i can afford to to a td04 and intercooler at the same time. It seems a waste to adapt an intercooler to the vf11 and then readapt to a td04. on that note.. as i understand, no tuning change for the td04, straight bolt on yea?

Engine compartment clean up is a top concern.. i have to unrig it, trim, and protect/secure alot.

Gauge area is a mess too...

front end and turbo x-member

this list of little things to do never really ends i guess.. lol

It really never ends, let me tell you. The td04 will bolt right up with the necessary custom intake and charge piping. No need to change anything else.

Sweet!

I just finally finished an engine swap (just a lowly N/A motor so I did not have to deal with harnesses or anything really out of the ordinary), and while the engine was out (oh..... 3+ years) I did all the same front end work also - wheel bearings, driveaxles, balljoints, tie rods, steering rack boots, found some GR-2 shocks in the junkyard, brakes, etc.

Good job! This is the OB setup I wanted ('til I got my FXT).

Please clarify...You're running a Turbo ECU, w/the 4-plug harness from the '91, merged into the EJ25D's harness?

Wiring makes me ill, but that sounds like the best way to make it work....The OBD1 vs. OBD2 wiring is probably similar.

Again - Nice Work,
Td

Thanks! i have quite a bit of blood and sweat in this thing lol

It uses the ej22 turbo ecu and standalone harness i cut from the donor car. The ej25d harness is actually still in place, wire tied up. I have wired in the fuel pump, tach and fans, so far. Just taped into them at the stock ecu plugs. The standalone worked with a simple 12+ wire and ground hooked to the battery. With a manual tranny and speedo. it became pretty simple after extracting the harness. I am runing manual temp, oil, and boost gauges.

It's a rig job for now. But rigability is why i drive subarus. =D
