New to the forum

Post by fella »

Hey all, i'm an englishman living in the south island of NZ. more legacies over here than people i think.

4 People live in my house and we all have legacies in various states of neglect and decay. A 1991, 92 facelift and 2 94's. All station wagons.

Will get a good shot of em all lying there looking sorry for themselves but they are all daily users and pretty reliable.

Personally i have ony known as Blue571. Its a 91 1.8 with the hi lo gearbox.

Bog standard apart from some massive dents int he door and bumper, and its on some 2nd gen 15's. It will be getting the struts and springs from a 91 gt pretty soon though so it should change how it sits. Will get some shots up as soon as i can.

Already found the site a great asset having searched is maticulously to work out what i can do to the old girl to improve her. She's done 207k and still not had the camblet done so that is on the list.

Cheers.

right firstly as this seems like a good a thread as any... i have access to a 91 gt wagon that has blown up engine wise.

everything else is on it except wheels. Whats worth stealing, easy to pop off that would make an improvement to blue571?

I'm having all the struts as mine are shot and it should improve the ride somewhat. Do i need to take off the swaybars and stuff etc, i;m hoping th struts just bolt straight up???

also thinking about a rear disc conversion, though drums are quite strong from my vw experience.... what you reckon? i would need the complete hubs, handbrake gubbins.. what else? all the other arms from the back too???

i will be back with more

^^ so the rear sway bar will work, but the front is shaped differently between turbo and n/a.

I'd take the front end body pieces (hood, bumper, headlights, etc) assuming they fit. By that I mean if the GT wagon is a pre-facelift (with the slanted headlights like yours). If the headlights are basically straight the body pieces won't fit.

-all the ground effects

-front and rear brakes. Fronts will bolt on, and are larger than yours. Rears you just need to get the hub/knuckle assembly and parking brake cables. All the brake fluid lines bolt on, as well as axles, etc (abs and non abs hubs are interchangeable if you don't have abs). If you just get the fronts the braking balance will be moved way forward.

The seats should be an improvement to yours, door cards to match the seats.

Hmm can't think of anything else at the moment.

rear sway bar is bigger than mine you mean or i dont have one? would it be a direct swap on the sway bar or would the mounts need to be swapped too? the car is a drive away so i cant just nip out and have a look at it. sorry to be asking all these questions...

im not doing the body panels, quite like the angry looking slanted headlights!! im not gonna change engines so dont need to worry about pre or post hoods with the turbo intake slot thing, will leave that be.

what do you mean by ground effects??

the brakes would be an option but it would need new pads and discs, and i've just done that to mine!!! doh.

considering the rear if the rear drum pads are low on blue at current...

the interior is shot and has had bits taken already, its a different colour too. not so worried about that. just things that would improve handling or benefit braking/engine stuff.

many thanks for the info bud,

Yeah I really prefer the pre-facelift myself (it went 90-91 here though). The ground effects are the body trim pieces under the bumpers and sides of the car.

ahhh that looks sweet, my car is gonna get thrashed up and down an unsealed ski hill road so i it will never look shiny i'm afraid. and it has two almighty dents in it!!!!

so of this GT I think i will take the struts and springs, rear brake assembley and the rear hubs with the bits for the handbrake.

i will look into the rear sway bar, just wondering if i will need to take the mounts for it if those bits are different from mine?? maybe it will be different on the wishbone too...

will find out in good time i guess.

Welcome to the BBS.

The anti-sway bar should mount up to your stock mounts, but it would be good to look at first to confirm.
