Drive plate/Flex plate question...

I recently had oil leaking from my engine at a rate of 1 qt/half hour. I replaced the oil pan seal and bolts since it was coming from the rear only to have my worst fears come true and it was pouring out the very rear, I pulled the engine out and found that the drive plate where it bolts to the crank had spun a half inch while the outside which bolts to the torque converter did not move so with this minor twist it made a sharp cutting edge that pointed forwards and shredded the main seal up and emptied the oil out. Had anyone had this happen and will it happen again if I get a new plate. Also where can I find one? No parts stores seem to have any clue what I am trying to find.

wow... never seen that before. At least you caught it now before it got worse and could have potentially come to pieces, maybe really carving up the block halves. You should be able to find a plate online or at the junkyard, I don't know if that would be a part that would be newly manufactured new... (? rockauto?)

That's a pretty common failure. I've seen it tons of times on many different cars, including Subarus.

It shouldn't happen again.

A factory replacement can be had at a cost of $48 from SubaruGenuineParts.com if you go to parts and then browse to your car's year and model. It is under "Automatic Transaxle" and is called a "Drive Plate".

I'm not sure what the difference between the turbo & non-turbo flex plates are, but they do have different part #'s.

Non-turbo - 12332AA032
Turbo - 12332AA042

The part number I had was 12332AA040 but it wouldn't pull up on any parts sites. Good to know you have the correct number for him.

I don't know what the difference is either.

It seems some of the online parts sites are showing superceded part #'s. Subaruparts.com is about the only one that still shows the new superceded part # when entering the old part #.

It seems you are correct. Subaruparts does pull up the superceded number. I'll use them from now on. They are a little more expensive though, so I'll probably still just buy from the other site.

It bugs me that when you look up a part on the dealer sites through their part selector you don't get to see the part number. I use the parts catalog whenever I can instead, but this time it wasn't helping because I was missing the secret superceded parts website. Lol.

The N/A's have a smaller flex plate and the turbos have a bigger one. If you need the part number I will dig mine out of the shop. It only has like 4k miles on it so the part number tag is still there. BTW when I changed mine it looked exactly like yours, center spun.

Oh yeah I picked mine up from 1stpartsforsubaru and was told there was only 2 left in the country because of the tsunami in Japan trashed some of Subaru's warehouses or something.

Subaru said they would get it in tomorrow...got it today! Install tomorrow! Replacing valve lash adjusters too
