ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.

My questions are, can anyone tell me what exactly is knocking, is it the piston(s), or the crank?
And does anyone know of a relatively cheap place to get oem parts for it, or will I have to frankenmotor it?
I don't have many choices, I need a car, and I do not have enough money to buy a relatively decent used car as I recently lost my job. (no transportation)
Used cars in this area are very expensive to get anything in working condition.

So, no ideas at all?
I don't have time to wade through every single post that has been made on this forum in the last ten years.

Re: ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.
That sounds like either a rod bearing knock or a main bearing knock. Do you have silvery flakes in your oil?
Get a replacement used motor or rebuild that one. Or sell it and buy a new car.

Re: ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.
I'll check the oil to see.
The rest I know, I just wondered if there is a cheap place to get oem parts that is reliable that anyone recommends

You can get ACL Bearings pretty cheap on Ebay. Also master gasket sets are on there from time to time. I'd go all OEM though since you know that stuff is good and you can't afford to keep re-replacing stupid gaskets and parts.
Thing is though, when you tear down the block you'll have a bunch of "might as well's" that really add to the cost. Older motor? Might as well replace the rings and get a hone. Might as well replace the oil pump. Might as well do a full timing job with all the rollers and water pump. clutch job and flywheel resurface if applicable, etc etc. I don't know what you paid for the car but R&Ring them is certainly not cheap, unfortunately.
I agree with alphius, you're better off getting a different motor in working condition.

www.subarugenuineparts.com www.1stsubaruparts.com www.subaruparts.com are some options for Subaru parts.
I too would probably just suggest picking up a used motor.

Re: ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.
As far as I know, picking up a used ej22t isn't really easy, and ej20g's are going for $1400.
I can't find a running used car for under that amount in my area, and I have about $700, could I rebuild the motor, with oem parts for around that?

Re: ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.
To reply to the first part, I believe you can get an ej20g shortblock for a couple hundred since they're really not that desirable, unlike their heads. I bought a closed deck shortblock for 300 shipped, and I sold an open deck one for $100. Both in good condition. This block and your heads will make for a fun combo with a slightly raised compression ratio. Matt Monson and others built a few back in the day. And you can actually buy ej20g specific head gaskets through the US dealer network.
Alternately, if you can find a good condition ej22 N/A shortblock, you could put your pistons in there and hold on to the ej22t till you could afford a proper rebuild. The n/a shortblock (with turbo pistons) is plenty strong for what 90% of us are running on here.
To the second part, can you do all the labor of rebuilding a short block yourself? If not, don't even think about it with that budget.

Myself I'd pull the block and check for wear. Most internals are easy to come by. The block is truly the important part...but I luckily have the luxury of having spare vehicles around and athe machine/mechanics shop while I fix things.

I agree, a shortblock replacement is your quickest and cheapest option. Either a turbo shortblock from an EJ20 or an N/A shortblock with turbo pistons. You can do a piston swap without splitting the block halves.
Alternatively, you could try your luck with running the N/A shortblock with N/A pistons and running the wastegate boost setting of 5psi and always run premium fuel but you would still run a decent risk of blowing that one up too. It would be by far the easiest option however.

Re: ej22t, lost oil somehow, now knocking.
I guess I'll look around for a ej20 shortblock, my main concern there is won't I be doing much of the same work to that as I would to my ej22t?
I'm not really sure where I will find the shortblock, I don't seem to see many of them for sale right this moment, but I probably don't know the best places to look either.
And I'm in Pennsylvania.

There is a member here from the penn area, Blackbart, who may be able to help you out with parts. IIRC he mainly deals only with the USDM BC-BF parts, but he might have something for a shortblock for you. Good guy to know and very reasonable.

Does anyone know of anywhere else I may be able to get a ej20 block and stuff?
