Smokes on stat up and stumbles on idle
So i need some help i tried looking around on the boards but could not find anything any help will be appreciated.... i got a 94 TW and about 2 weeks ago i started her up and a think cloud of grayish smoke poured out of the exhaust and this is stock exhaust but after about 10 - 20 seconds clears right up and sounds like a Subaru with no cats(in my opinion it sounds pretty good) but anyway... i let her warm up every morning because if i don't ill hit boost and shell glug down like a cold old school carb. when i come up to a light and come to a full stop she acts like shes stumbling over herself. i checks all plugs and it look like a its running on all cylinders. really ruff idle but idles about 7 or 8 hundred. just a little advice to look for. oh yeah the mods i got on it is snorkus delete with one of the tubes going down into the snorkus cut off so kinda like a cold air with stock box. coffee cup mod and diamond coil pack. tried cleaning up all the cracked hoses but i think the intake elbow has some holes in it. thanks i have learned a lot on here and have become the Subaru genius of whatcom county from this site so thank u all.

How is your gas mileage?
What maintenance have you done recently? Temperature related issues I usually lean towards the coolant temp sensor. It's cheap to replace and can have pretty significant issues if it's not working properly.

temperture wise she hasnt gotten hot or even above the middle. ill change it out tonight to see if it helps any i never thought about that, gas milegae is about 200 to 250 a tank worse than my n/a but i thought it might just be because this one was turbo and im usually WOT most of the time. Would that make it smoke on startup?

i have done knock sensor, mobile one 10/30 oil change, ngk plugs, i thought it might have been the dimond coil so i put my stock one back on and it would rev up but not idle just died. new k/n filter.

200-250 to a tank isn't bad. I'm not sure the coolant temp sensor is going to be your problem, but if your engine has some miles on it, it can't hurt replacing it.
If the car won't run at idle, it sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere, or possibly a MAF issue.

Re: Smokes on stat up and stumbles on idle
yeah im thinking i might down the TW and just try to replace all the lines and try to find a new 90 elbow for it, thats what i was thinking and then somone told me the inner oil seal on the turbo went out and all the symptoms match im new to turbo cars im coming from old school v8s but have had my fun with subarus so im a little lost i have no check light either. and i also thought it might have been the valve stem seals leaking into the cylinder but i dont know how frequently they go out on these cars. i think i just might do a full rebuild on it with 2.5 heads i got laying around with my td04 but i like the gas mileage it gets unlike my damn nova
Re: Smokes on stat up and stumbles on idle
I'm averaging around 300-350 miles to a tank with my stock EJ22T and 4.111 gears (sedan) Perhaps the wagons suffer a little more from the weight addition.
Did the car sit for a few weeks without running?
Have you noticed significant oil consumption before?
+1 on te coolant temp sensor, mine was faulty and I never threw a cel nor stored a code.
I would definitley scan for codes, even though there is no CEL that doesn't mean there isn't somehting stored, it might give you some insight. Other than the water temp sensor, I definitley wouldn't go replacing things without some basic checks. Josh (Legacy777) has been kind enough to supply the board with several FSM scans wich outline differnt checks for various sensors.
A leaky turbo is not really something to screw around with as it can lead to a bit more catastrophic problems, but I'm trying to imagine how a faulty turbo would lead to a rough idle...just to test the concept you could wire the wastegate in the open condition and start it up. the turbo wouldn't spool and you would have a direct flow to the exhaust.
I'm definitley not trying to say anyone has been wrong thus far with their assumptions, but it almost sounds like you have multiple things going on.

Smoke on start is often caused by oil that seeps past the valve stem seals. Common on older cars. Nothing you can do short of replacing stem seals.
