5 speed swap
I was curious what would be the best car to swap a 5 speed into my car(1994 legacy turbo)... either a 1996 legacy or 1996 impreza? i hear i can hear either pedal assembly but im pretty sure the legacy wagon rearend mounts different. but i dk I have access to buy either for 150 bucks so i was curious to which one to buy.
Re: 5 speed swap
You shouldn't have to do anything to rear end. Depending on the final drive ratio, you may have to swap the rear diff, but different rear diffs can be interchanged between the different rear end mounts.
I personally would check the final drive ratio of each, and try to go with the one that would allow me to keep the stock rear end, (unless you want to change final drive ratio). Other thing to note is the Impreza MT rear drive line will probably be a different length than what you need. I think you'll need the Legacy rear drive line.

Re: 5 speed swap
So i can use the driveshaft and everything from the newer body legacy... whats the easiest way to check ratio is it anything like with a chevy and you can give the dealer the vin and they can give the ratio in a matter of seconds... if not whats the easiest way to do it

Typically there is a sticker on the rear diff cover that states the FD ratio but after years of driving, the sticker may be missing. Most of the manual non turbo legacy manuals were 4.11s which will not match your turbo Legacy being a 3.90. As far as the Imprezas go, I think more of them were 3.90s except the RS which was 4.11 as well.

Re: 5 speed swap
Also, when I was trying to match up a driveline for my car since I used an 02 Forester 5spd with an 01 RS rear diff, I measured almost every Subaru driveline from 92-08 and there was only one that was the same length that I needed which was from an 05 Legacy automatic. Something else to note, the newer rear diffs use a different flange than the gen 1 Legacys so the older driveline won't match up unless you change the flange on the rear diff or change to a newer driveline like I did. I can't remember if 96 had the newer style flange or not but I can check it tomorrow.
