fuel pump issues?

Post by ride_child »

So this has happened to me a few times over the past month or so, but my car will be driving/running fine then its like it loses power. its happened when ive tried to start it up, and its happened when ive been driving down the road. it still has electrical power and doesnt die, but i step on the gas and nothing happens.
most of the time if its running and this happens, it doesnt last long and returns to normal. if it happens when im starting it, then if im close to a hill ill compression start it and its fine, if not i disconnect the battery for 5 or so minutes, reconnect and its fine. i just changed the fuel filter, have a new battery, coil, wires, and plugs, tested the alternator and its fine.
so i have to come to the conclusion that its the fuel pump. the car has 195000 miles and as far as i know the original fuel pump, so even if its not, im gunna get a walbro 255. but i read a ppost on here about someone havin nearly the same problem and it was the fuel pump connector.
Just lookin for ideas/input on what the issue might be.

Thanks in advance,
Kris

?fuel pump issues?

Post by 94SS_Canada »

Your at that point where you can replace the pump as an excuse for preventative maintenance. It's fairly cheap and super simple to do.

Before installation take a close look at your connecter and check the pins for looseness or wear. Also take a look at the whole assembly make sure it's not broken or floating which will cause fuel starvation in certain conditions.

Hope this helps a little

?fuel pump issues?

It's a very rare that this happens, the fuel pump assembly itself breaks so the pump itself is floating.

Get the walbro and see if that fixes it. Make sure you get the kit for it too so its plug and play. I think its the 93-98 impreza kit. Should be about $120. If that doesn't do it try replacing your coolant temp sensor. Or maybe replace that first since its so cheap and I think its pretty easy to do if its right under the alternator. But if I were you I'd replace the pump anyway since its so old.

Coolant temp sensor huh, how would that cause my issues? Not questioning, just curious haha.

The ECU reads it to determine cold start fuel mixture I think but it can have a pretty big influence on your AFR.

I agree it would be a good idea to change the pump, but I'd suggest checking the connector under the rear seat first to see if it looks "burnt".

The symptoms you describe also kind of sound like a MAF sensor failing, but I'd probably save that for after you've done some more troubleshooting or replaced the fuel pump.

How have you determined the fuel pump is the problem? Have you tested pressure?

Have you checked to see if any codes are stored and run the active diagnostic with the green connectors?

thanks for the info kimo!
josh- the connector definitely looks burnt, so im changing that with the pump. i do have a jecs for future use with a rob tune. i havent tested pressure or ran any codes... i know, i know, i should determine 100% that its the fuel pump, i guess im just kind of wishful thinking that it is, because it makes sense, its an old pump and need to replace it anyway, and am going to have to anyway with the direction i want to go with the build. plus the fact of how easy it is to change is a factor as well :)

Sweet. Try the temp sensor first or I guess it doesn't matter which one just don't do both at once or we won't know what it was.

Haha didn't think of that, the only issue with that is this is an intermittent problem, I will most likely have have no idea which does the trick unless I pull the part out and its obviously f-ed up.
