Now I have a semi-important question here...I really want tpo degrease and clean the engine bay as clean as humanly possible, but I do have an oil leak in the valve covers somewhere...would it be a bad idea to degrease, just b/c I don't want to degrease the inside of the motor through the heads, or get any degreaser in the oil pan...just a thought

The chances of degreaser/water getting inside the engine....unless you have a gaping hole in the valve covers....is pretty slim.

I would suggest fixing the leak in the valve covers, assuming you know where it is, or else cleaning the engine bay will be in vain.

I figured as much lol,I guess i'm just being paranoid.

Image
so back to work.....

Image
Rear drums all done, complete with hardware

I found out a few aggravating things today, the ABS reluctor ring is broken, my rear passenger hard line broke at the fitting, and probably both sides need replacing, and it look like dropping the cross member is necessary to get to them...Here is the carnage...
Image
broken reluctor ring...other side is probably the same story...
Image
The rear brake line that just broke off, looks like a serious pain to get replace this line...>:(
I also removed the rear struts...and he top mounting plates are beat and rusted so I need new mounts also...

So not very good news here, Now I need:
2 ABS Reluctor rings
2 Rear strut top mounts
2(or more) hard brake lines

I believe I also need to replace the wheel bearings when getting the reluctor rings off, and I wanted to know If I could just grab spindles from another AWD Subaru and if so what years etc would it have to be, it would probably be cheaper to get newer hubs if possible...please let me know I need to do something about this ASAP!!! And Do I need to drop the rear cross member to get to these brake lines? I can see where they come through the back seat...I am kind of dreading this...lol

I got my hub from an outback which was a 98 I believe but I think there's quite a range of models and years that will work. I say just get rid of the abs.

Sucks you have all that rust. Makes me cringe every time I see a car with rust. I guess we're spoiled here. My car is virtually rust free. And I take it for granted most of the time until I see cars on here that have it all over.

Yeah the rust is pretty substantial...hopefully I can find a clean chassis to swap everything over at some point...maybe even into a GC, it really depends on what I find.

I am going to see of these 98RS spindles will work hopefully they will...

Ok good to know, yeah I really didn't want to have to do anything extra if I can avoid it...I did run into a bit of trouble on the rear brakes again though...it seems as though the starwheel adjuster can't get adjusted inward enough to allow the ebrake shoes to come in enough to get the rear rotors on...like the starwheel is too long, it looked longer than the ones it came with but I didn't really think to much of it..anyone else run into this? Did they send me the NA Legacy rear hardware or something, b/c everything else seems to fit perfectly

So here is what I did get done today....
Image
The strut and the mount that need to be installed, I already disassembled the V7 top plates
The strut assembled...dust boot kinda just chills there now....not very useful lol
Image
I'll try and keep it out of the mud and clean
Image
And the struts are installed in the rear, I also managed to loose a strut bolt so I need to grab a new one from the dealer unless someone knows the exact measurements of it...looks like an M14 but I really don't feel like looking all the specs up for a stupid bolt....I just want the car on the road and only stupid crap is hilding me up at this point.

Forgot to post up a few picks from when I went to get some prices at the dealer, I took of the one BRZ that Balise has, this thing looks so badass, I really want one lol

Well anyway, today was fun (/sarcasm) Ball joints were the worst Subaru ball joints I have ever had to remove (although I bet the SS ones would be even more shitted-out) They were basically welded in there so I used many methods to try and remove them, of course ultimately using a violence method to actually get em out :)

Image
here I was heating it up to try and punch the mutilated cotter pin out.....FUTILITY!:curse::curse: So I couldn't use the ball joint tool and ended up having to beat the fuck out of a pickle fork until they came out....fun fun, and wasted all my time at school today...

Image
they did finally come out, but man are they uber shitty inside
Image
I cleaned em up really good with a wire cup brush on a die grinder but ran outta time to take any pictures.

I also took the liberty to clean up this one strut camber bolt, for some reason just this side was all shitty
Image
before
Image
after

I also started the brake lines in the rear, removed all the old fucked ones and routed the hard lines around the rear X member, and through the hole in the floor of the back seat. This is what I was doing when I ran out of time....
Image
inside the car
Image
The 07 STi rear hard lines.

I could def use some backing plates for the front, they are just jagged scraps of metal bolted to the knuckle....other than that I am ready to bang the rest of this out asap!!

Yeah the BRZ is really a nice looking car. I'd really like to get one, but I can't justify having three cars...

Good work on the ball joints. I don't envy you....I'm not a big fan of doing them either.

Yeah they always suck because no one ever puts anti seize on em before installing, on my 04 RS after I remove the back bolt they practically fall out, I forgot to mention how that bolt broke in one of these knuckles an I had to drill it out ....it was ever so much fun.....lol

Beats the Mazda3 where the balljoint is welded into the control arm, which is over $400.

good god do they do that just to torture people? I bet it is designed so it isn't obviously welded in so you smash on it with ultimate vilolence mode engaged and it is all in vain lol.

I can't bring myself to spend $50 on 2 starwheel adjusters from the dealer, and my instructor is not allowing me to justm grind my new ones down lol. Does anyone have a set of these I could buy? i am getting desperate here!!!

No, you could see the spot welds. The way the suspension was designed, the strut had to fit perfectly into the ball joint, but fitting a compressor into the strut tower was incredibly difficult, so trying to align it when you couldn't get the angle of the ball joint to quite make it was not fun. Ended up destroying the balljoint seal with a pickle fork, necessitating the balljoint/control arm replacement a year later. Some things don't pay to DIY.

Driving a Mazda doesn't pay :D Well today I made sure to slather my balljoints in antideize. I remember doing the ball joints for the second time on my 04 RS and the balljoints came right out no problem...

Front struts are in, went to grab some axle nuts from my local dealership, as none of the parts stores had any...
Image
Image
Suspension is completely in now, tie rods have pins frozen inside the hold and broken off so I need to punch them out so that should be fun...

After that the front end will go together easily, then I just need to re-route the rear brake lines, I alrady have them routed inside the car under the seat and the passenger side is hooked up, I just need to bend the lines across the rear crossmember and then to the brake clip and brake line...

and still need starwheels...does anyone have a picture of their rear ebrake assembly...I want to just grind them down to the correct size....some pics would help you if you have a set you can send me, b/c I am not paying another $50 lol
