Turbo and intercooler installed!

Post by Flatfourced »

So here's some pics and story of my progress. I'm happy to have finally started building power after my swap.

I spent a couple months skimming my paycheck and collecting parts for my big install. Nasioc was great and their members were fair and truthful on 4/4 transactions. One guy was a little late but ended up being a good condition td04 for 60 bucks! Samco y-pipe, 06 wrx cooler, 04 forester bpv (didnt fit well, might rethink) total cost = $215 with the turbo. Such wonderful cheap power.

I also finally got to use my 4-3" in downpipe and get 3" exhaust installed. I have had this downpipe for almost 2 years. The guy that sold me my outback had alot of parts laying around. After hearing my plans for the car and seeing the wife's wrx he gave it to me along with a turboxs midpipe. The dp had a bent turbo flange but was a monster, i sat on it, got it fixed, and installed. We had to cut the midpipe and use it as the flange. My exhaust shop is a customer of the parts store i work for so i got a good back scratch on the cost. Total for the turbo back 3in = $100.

Hallman mbc, new hoses, gaskets, bolts, and the specter intake (i know, but it works) ect.. and i'm a total of about $500 into this build.

A general guess at hp, i would say at the 10 lbs i run, the ol butt dyno reads 200. Hopefully by next year i can be rob tuned 550 and push 16psi out of this td04.

Anyway, on with the show.

Have no idea how this dp fit under a wrx!

I doubt you'll need 550s if you're sticking with the TD04 when you robtune it. Nice work though looks like you did a good job.

As i understand it, the 440 side feeds are only from ej20g / ej20k. Meaning they were never really released in a USDM car. But the 550's are much more common, being on usm ej255 and 257s.

So for future part avalibility, the 550's with the td04 set at 16lbs would be the best choice. Guess i need to talk to rob to find out if that is doable.

Anyway that's my main reason for the 550 preferance.

The Legacy, OB, Baja, and Forester all use 550s w/their smaller turbos - Forester (and early Baja?) were TD04, too, AFAIK. Yes, those are EJ25's, but I agree - use the easy to get 550's w/the '92-94 NA rails and you're good to go. Rob can tune for those- not problem.

Also, you'll need an STi, or '06-07 WRX or FXT '06-'08 BPV to fit properly on that '06 IC, from my experience.
