OK. Location..Salton Sea, CA. Event: 50th Anniversiary Tierra Del Sol Desert Safari

I was told by some of our scouting buddies/parents that my boys would have a blast running some trails and watching all the dig dollar idiots ruin thier trucks attemting impossible obsticles. So we decided to head out.

This thing is HUGE. Prolly like 5,000 RVs, 7,000 Jeeps and sand toys, and 10,000+ people. I was blown away how crazy it was. So we spent the better part of the morning just trolling around looking (in vain) for friends. We did some light off roading and a few hill climbs. Monteros of those years are suprisingly good. We finally meet up with a buddy and after a bit more trail running and looking for more friends we decide to go to the main Expo and check out the vendor tents.

By now, my two boys and my buddies two boys are all in my truck because he doesn't really wanna stress his brand new Tacoma 4x4. He supposedly knows where the Expo is, so I decide to follow him. Unexpected to me, he pulls off the road into a large open area with a long ridge in the back. Ironically, it seems to be the only place that not full of RVs and Jeeps. In hindsight, I wonder if it was private property? In any case, I pull up next to him and he points to a trail clawed into the side of the hill and asks if I can make it up that one. It was less than we had done earlier, so I promptly crawled up without issue.

What I didn't do, and I know better, was to walk up and scout it out first. Turns out the top was not like a plateau - it was a ridge - and promtly dropped off the other side. If I had scouted it, I would have known to turn left at the top and follow the ridge. By the time the truck leveled off and I could seen the ground again, we were already headed down with no chance at recovery. Straight down. 4 kids screaming. Holy crap, I thought, I'm the worst father in the world.

The seatbelts did what they were supposed to. There were no injuries beyond some minor seatbelt burns. And a huge lesson learned.

Called the first tow company that google (on the phone) pulled up, and he promptly got his tow truck stuck trying to come up the back side to get a good pulling position. Finally some Jeepers showed up and used thier winches to get both my truck and the tow truck out. I am planning on picking it up from his yard on wednesday.

The replacement:

Yes, I have a payment again....which sucks. But, man, this thing is NICE. And way more capable than any non-Rover fan would ever know. Just needs more appropriate tires.

Looks good to me. Hammer the hood and fender straight, Duct tape over the bumper and your good to go!

Also. glad this didnt happen to a legacy.

I know how tough Subarus are, and I rely on that almost everyday.

However, after hitting a deer this weekend while camping with my kids and the Scouts, I have a new found appreciation for the toughness of Land Rovers too.

This was the result of a 50mph hit with a medium sized deer.

As a former Land Rover Disco I owner, I second that statement. I thought I was screwed after flying through trails about 30mph and I hit a major pothole which made both my headlights to pop out, my hazards to come on, car shut off and alarm to go off. Plugged the headlight back in, took the key out, pressed the alarm-off button, turned her back on, drove 300 miles back home and she was aye-okay!

Nice Disco though dude, they're beasts and not too shabby on gas mileage! I miss mine so much...
