Rally X then huge boom.... need help

Post by devilzdriver »

Well gang the fun continues, i think my subie knows i dont know how to work on her so shes making sure i know what im doing. Well so as i was on the course in my second lap i was pushing it hard, and when i was making hard left or right turns id head the horrible metal on metal noise. Then i went for the finish line i i heard this horrible metal on metal / clunkingish sound. This is the kicker, the car can still drive? i didn't drive it home, i just got a tow but it makes the god aweful noise when being moved, it also can go in to gear without an issue. my question is did i blow up my center diff? or rear diff? I've read you can lift it and put it on stands, and hold one wheel and what ever wheel you hold the others will kick on. Any ideas that be great. Also im almost positive i can pull the center diff out with out taking the trans off right? Thanks Jack

Have you checked all the suspension and braking to make sure that's not the problem?

Is your car an auto or manual trans?

This should be something a mechanic could diagnose quickly. I'd check wheel bearings first, but who knows?

Suspension is brand new, at track had it on stands and checked brakes, did not check wheel bearings was not coming from wheels though only from the middle of the car.

Is the drive line rubbing on the rear dif guard? That makes a sound similar to what you're describing.

Any chance you could take a couple pictures from under the car of the driveline where it inputs into the transmission and where it bolts to the rear diff?

It's probably the the rear transfer gear. You could try dropping just the rear section of the trans to see what exactly is dead, but I'd probably drop the trans, split the case and inspect everything.

i cant get the rear section off because of these two darn snapped bolts the two bottom ones to be exact. And hawaii does not seem to sell EZ outs.... if it is the rear gear thats done, can i replace it? or is it easier to just buy a 04 WRX trans?

Is this going in a turbo or non-turbo Legacy?

IMO, it'd be better to get a new trans. However I think the 04 WRX trans is going to have a 1.1:1 gear reduction in the rear, so you'd either have to swap to the 3.545 rear diff or change the transfer gears in the rear. This is assuming you have a turbo Legacy. If you have a non-turbo Legacy, you'd have to swap to a hydraulic clutch setup with pedals and will likely be more of a pain in the butt.

I actually found a Impreza L 3.9 final drive AWD trans and i cleaned it and its going in tomorrow, i did alot of reading and the numbers on the trans tell me 3.9 and i have a 3.9 in the rear and it should just drop right in! yay!! also yes it is a Turbo leggy
