Roadtripping and my wagon lost an injector

Post by fngearhead »

Driving back to CO from NC and my turbo wagon decides to run on 3 cylinders. As far as I know this is a 95 WRX engine with grey top 550 sidefeeds. I had the same issue on cyl 3 a month ago and swapped in 4 spare injectors and all was fine. Now cyl 1 has quit. It was in and out a couple times over the weekend, but seems done for good now. In TN now and just need to get it home. Runs rough but will hang onto hwy speed. Any help would be greatly appreiated.

Do you have a multi meter with you that you can check the resistance of the injectors against each other to see if it's a bad injector or possibly wiring?

I do have a multimeter and it seems the injector is back in action after filling up with gas. At least for the minute it took to drive away from the pumps. I'm using a screwdriver as a stethascope. Just finished eating. Fingers crossed it keeps playing along.

I know this is no help to your current situation, but if you end up needing injectors, the gray top side-feeds were 440cc (actually flow about 450cc), in the WRX EJ20G engines. The JDM yellow side-feeds were 480cc...not to be confused w/the USDM STi 550 side-feeds.

And if you end up ordering them from the UK, where they were commonly used, they call 'em 380cc and called the 480's>>440's :? .....ONE LINK.

Also, if you're running the EJ20G CoP vs. the coil pack those coils are known to crack @ the spark plug and cause issues.

Dash, thanks for the info. The wagon has been running smooth since last night. I'm sick of chasing gremlins in this car. I never had a problem with the injectors on my '89 EJ20G swap in 40k miles. I suspect wiring on this one because things were a bit crispy when I got this car. Passing thru Columbia MO now and should be back in CO tomorrow.

I just checked the map, an you're on the 'set and forget' stage (unless you live up in the Rockies) of the trip...hope you brought a book to read (or better yet, listen to).

Edit: you're in Summit County....so @ least 'til Denver.

FWIW, I ski bummed @ Keystone many moons ago.

drive safe,
