Transmission tear down
Hey guys. I need some help. I have two 5 speed trannys. One is the hydro clutch and the other is a cable. Now what I am doing is transferring the newer hydro guts into the older case so I can have the cable clutch. Does anyone have a link with pics of tearing down the transmission. I have the center diff section with the tail piece still attached but separated from the rest of the transmission. Have never opened one up but am confident I can do what I intend. Just any advice or info would be great. Thx guys

Re: Transmission tear down
Can you provide some additional details?
Are both 5spds from non-turbo cars? Are you the final drive ratios the same? Do you know the years they came from? If all you're wanting to swap is the clutch actuation, why are you wanting to open up the transmission? Assuming both have the same final drive ratio and utilize the push style clutch setup, you should be able to switch the clutch forks and pivot ball location, if needed.

Re: Transmission tear down
One is a 5 speed from an Outback 96 I believe, the other is 5 speed turbo, out of a legacy turbo. I was able to split the cases and everything is exactly the same other than the legacy tranny is hydraulic clutch. So I am swapping the newer guts into the older case for the cable style clutch. Both are 4-11's.

Re: Transmission tear down
Is this an 05+ Legacy Gt turbo 5spd or an older turbo legacy 91-94 transmission?

Re: Transmission tear down
I guess all you can do is try the guts swap. Two things to keep in mind is that the gear back lash and tolerances will not be the same between cases and may require more or less shims. This is something that unless you've got knowledge on how to do it, might prove to be difficult and if not done correctly could cause premature failure of the gear set.
Also, check the newer transmission to see if it has a spot for the speed sensor. The latest trans do not have a speed sensor and the speed info is received from the ABS tone wheels. If this trans is like that, you will run into issues with trying to get a speed sensor signal to the dash.

Re: Transmission tear down
You have to swap the shift forks and all that b.s. also phase 1 internals are compatible in phase 2 transmissions and vise-versa.
It's quite the hassle if you don't know what your doing.
