First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
Hey everyone I am looking at a 1993 Legacy 2.0T wagon. It is a right hand drive automatic. Now my question is I really don't know much about the first Gen EJ20T like is it a good motor? Is it as good as the EJ22T?
Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
Welcome to the BBS.
Yeah the first gen EJ20T's are pretty good motors as well and should be closed deck. Is this an overseas RHD car or a RHD US car? If overseas, I'd make sure it's got good registration so you can register the car.

Thank you
Well the car is from Japan, and now it is in Canada. How can I make sure that it is a good registration?

It won't be legal for importation until it's 25 years old.

So what you are saying is that I can't bring it from Canada legally until the car is 25 years old?

I'm sure you can get it here, but you cannot register it through. There are importation specialists who charge fees to bypass the laws and grease appropriate palms to make these "legal" however.

Oh ok so how much money do you think I am looking at for them to make it "Legal"?

I do. What do you want to know?
-220HP stock,
-closed deck block most likely, all had old style DOHC heads
-Air to Water intercooling
-Turbo size falls inbetween TD04 and TD05

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
No, the stock first gen ej20 "t" came in various flavors. Ranging from 200-275 hp. Come to think of it, since the wagon you are talking about is an auto, it might have 200hp.
Where it was originally sold also has a bearing on output, as Japanese models tended to have more power than European or Australian delivered ones.

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
The guy that is selling it said he got it from Japan. I am wanting to do a 5Speed swap on it, front mount intercooler, Bigger Turbo, and bigger exhaust. Do you know what turbo comes on them?
Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
^Probably a VF8, VF10 or VF12....
You need to a add a 'tune' to your list, first.
It'll take the EJ20G Rob Tune listed on here.
But, really, unless $$ is no object, I'd get the $$ on getting it here legally....Canada>>US is not an easy process.

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
It probably had a vf10 from new, but who's to say if the owner didn't fit a bigger turbo in the last 19 years. Honestly, getting it legally imported is prob going to cost you an equal amount to the purchase price, if not more.
Since we did get a version of this here (aka the "Touring Wagon"), I would recommend trying to find one of those for a couple grand. If you want the JDM wagon for it's right hand drive-ness, well we got those here too as "postal wagons." If you bought a Touring Wagon AND a Postal wagon, and swapped the turbo drivetrain over, you would be ahead by several grand.

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
Ya I found out that it is between $1000-$3000 to import. I like the raised roof, the right hand drive and now I am liking the EJ20T.

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
^^that's better than I thought. Ej20 (in this case, the ej20'g' as subaru never labeled any engine ej20't'. The ej22t was the only factory ej engine with a 't' which tends to confuse importers lol), is a really easy swap into the touring wagons and SS's, and RHD postal wagons, although the postal wagon would be a little more work.
Can't fault you on wanting a raised roof RHD genuine Legacy GT though.

Re: First Gen EJ20T VS EJ22T
My state trooper buddy said I might be able to get it even cheaper than $1000 seeing that I know a lot of cops.
I think the RHD raised roof just look so much cleaner. My brother has a 1990 Legacy wagon that he is dropping a 2.2T in it right now, and that is way I am wanting something a little different from his.
