Rod #1 seems to be the one that has caused the major engine crisis. At the shop we think that the knock that started about a month or so ago was #1 and it slowly tore up the bearing until it finally spun 90 degrees and stalled. The oil has a few types of metal in it so it really shave the bearing down a lot. I don't see a lot of heat or major oil starvation. The machine shop said the crank just needed cleaned and was STD, but the tuner shop close to me says they have had issues with them in the past about engines blowing up.

That is where I am right now with this. I am taking my motor to AWD Tuning to see what they think about the block and crank and whether I need a new one or not.

What could cause the pistons to look so old? I was having an idle issue where it would stay at 2-3k when I stopped and take like 30-45 seconds to calm down. Slight hesitation also on acceleration.

Number 3 piston is the only one that looks like it may have been running lean. These engines tend to be rather "carbony". How many miles were on them? How were the specs between the cylinder walls & pistons? Did the machine shop measure them?

How do the cylinder bores look? Have the engine bores been bored already? If so, how much?

Engine had maybe 4-6k on it.

The machine shop bored the cylinders .020 and matched them to the pistons.

Is this the same machine shop, AMS Automotive Machine Supply in Fort Worth that AWD tuning has seen issues with?

Yes it is. Mary from Awd told me about their issues but it was too late and my block was already being bored. She told me I could bring it up to her and see if they can help.

Re: RckyMtnLegacy's 93 Turbo 'SadPanda' Spinning Bearings!

Post by RckyMtnLegacy »

Block, crank, rods, and pistons are now with AWDTuning so we will see what is to come soon.

Keith at AWDT thinks it could be the thrust bearing at #3 that caused the crank to "walk" and wear the bearings and cause failure inside and outside on the sprocket/pulley. May machine the block and move the thrust bearing to #5.

He also thinks the pistons being so nasty could be caused by a bad hone and too much gap between piston and walls.

Hope it doesnt break the bank.

So after talking with Keith at AWDTuning I think I just may try and go with an JDM EJ20. I have always wanted to do a swap and figured since the car is down I might as well go ahead and have some fun.
