headlight conversion problem
I put a set of hid's in my 91. The low beams are nice and bright but the high beams are pretty much worthless bc they do shoot way to the sides but not much in front. I had the kind that move the bulb when you switch to high beams bc they are the cheapest on eBay.
Wiring was the hardest part. Unless its different for your car but they are most likely negative switching lights and most of the kits aren't set up for that.

Welcome to the BBS.
I would echo the comments above and suggest not using the HID builbs. If you want to improve your lighting, you can get a relay installation kit from Daniel Stern lighting and upgrade the wiring. Also, if you want to spend the money you can buy the overseas glass headlamps that have a much better beam pattern and use an H4 bulb. Keep an eye out in the parts shed. You'll see someone selling a set every now and then.

Re: headlight conversion problem
The bulbs should fit in the housing, if they are 9004/9007 bulb housing. I am am running HIDs in mine and yes they are nice but you do blind oncoming traffic.

try the bi exxon bulbs. they have a high low position and a metal beam defuse r all you should have to do is a re aim alil lower. i put my hid's in my moms subie since i'm driven it til mines fixed and i'm not blinding anyone. but mine are 12k's

I SECOND this quote.
Anyone who puts HIDs in NON-HID lenses is a moron.
Simply put: normal bulbs put light out near the top, so the lenses are made to capture this light.
HID bulbs put out light at the sides of the bulb, so those lenses are set to capture that light.
Its like just randomly grabbing someones eyeglasses and wearing them. Yes, you can see, but I GUARANTEE its WAY OFF!
Get some EDM glass lenses, run a relay ( original harness relay with power from the battery- capture all the voltage you can) and run the ultra stars bulbs- about the best you can get.
Yes I have too many Subarus
