4eat gear oil spill
i was driving to work and when i got there i saw smoke and got the smell of gear oil. so i pop the hood and on the passenger side there is oil all over and smoke coming off the cat. i am not driving it now because i have no oil in the front differential and on my way home it was having resistance driving on the highway so the tc wouldnt lock up so i know the front diff has lots of resistance. the only weird thing that happened was 3 days before on a u turn i had some clunking and the steering and everything felt weird with so much torque bind... i have no reverse and now i cant even drive it so whats the best option to get me driving again. i live in vancouver and work in portland so driving a truck every day is going to suck.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
Easiest route is probably to replace yours with a rebuilt trans.
93 legacy wagon L, 22T swapped (TW imitator) now with five forward speeds. (Gone, but never forgotten)

Yeah, without tearing into the existing transmission & diff, it's hard to say what's exactly wrong and how much it would take to get it going again.
Getting a working used trans would probably be the quickest and easiest route.

i think all of the autos are the same up through 2nd gen, but I could very well be mistaken.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
The 92-94 non-turbo Legacies had a 3.9 final drive ratio, while the 90-91's had a 4.111 final drive ratio. You'll need to find a 92-94 non-turbo Legacy transmission or a 2nd gen phase 1 4EAT trans that has a 3.90 final drive ratio.
If you want to swap the rear end, you could potentionally run a transmission with a different final drive ratio.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
If you can find one (and assuming it works like people are saying), an Outback, Legacy GT or Legacy LSI (basically 96-98 cars with a 2.5 motor) tranny with 4.44 final drive would be a kick in the pants for acceleration. My mom's outback has that and it would demolish our manual transmission Outback (with 4.11 gears) up to highway speeds.
Re: 4eat gear oil spill
Yes, but your highway rpms are going to be very high.....which can be very annoying...not to mention the poor fuel economy.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
It's not as bad as you think josh. The 4.11FD auto in my 96 Legacy had me going 2.5-2.6k rpm at 70 and the 4.44FD in my mom's outback is roughly 2.8-2.9k rpm at the same. Much better than my jdm 4.11 tranny in my SS - 70mph is like 3.3k rpm!
Re: 4eat gear oil spill
Ok....well there must be different gearing in the transmissions for the various gears.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
i found a rebuild kit using the search and my uncle works at a dealership as a mechanic and does transmissions. he is going to get step by step oem directions for my transmission rebuild it and we are going to put a shift kit in and new Tc. hopefully before mid December. with a good rebuild like that how would you think the transmission would handle some extra power?

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
The gears should be able to take it from what i hear, but you may need to upgrade your torque converter to a high stall one and your valving depending on what ur going for in terms of power i am a noob but i'm picking up bits and pieces lol

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
As long as the clutches & everything is good, you should be ok with some extra power.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
High stall torque converters are stronger, but by no means are a necessary upgrade just for holding more power. It'll make power-brake launches way more fun, but they're also expensive and would reduce fuel economy quite a bit below lock speed (40ish mph).Someperson wrote:The gears should be able to take it from what i hear, but you may need to upgrade your torque converter to a high stall one and your valving depending on what ur going for in terms of power i am a noob but i'm picking up bits and pieces lol
Really, a shift kit and a trans oil cooler should do the job for anything you're likely to throw at it with the EJ22 block and heads in there.

Re: 4eat gear oil spill
i was going to replace all the clutches and the brake bands inspecting the gears replacing the torque converter maybe with an OEM replacement for a wrx auto or something thats made for over 200hp. i want to make at least 220whp by next may.
