MY94 Turbo Legacy From Montana

Post by DougFresh »

Hello everyone.. i have been a LONG LONG time browser and i finally committed to making a profile.

I am no stranger to subarus and i have built a few imprezas.
first car i started with was a 2000 2.5RS with a WRX EJ205 swap and RS trans that got me a 13.5 three times in a row at the drag strip. I like to auto cross i love to course race.

In Montana there is a 3 mile long track that we rent 3 times a summer and have a blast.

I have owned a 2004 STi..

i am on my second Leggy-T; this one i have actually put some time into..

well.. it has been a long road in the making.. I first bought my legacy with 130k miles a year and a half ago. since then these are the items i have had the joys of replacing.

-timing belt and all new pully's
-alternator
-radiator
-both front axles
-struts and springs
-suede headliner
-head unit and subwoofer (alpine type R12")
-wheels
-LW crank pulley
-installed an intercooler on a non intercooled car from the factory.
-installed WRX turbo
-Custom intake
-new brake pads (i would really like wrx 4 pistons/brembos/stoptech/what ever fits the ballin on a budget)

the car gets really poopy fuel mileage in town. (its a ghey automatic)

This has inspired me to FINALLY get off my ass and post everything from my build, I'm such a slacker when it comes to posting pic's and stuff.... Build looks great! I too was a lurker here for a long time before making an account. I wonder how many people would have to sign up if Josh (Legacy777) made it members only to view??!?! I'm guessing tons!

if i do a manual swap, i am torn between a jdm 5 speed with dccd or 6spd dccd... I would prefer 6 speed for long term reliability..

Nice looking car! Not sure if you know, but that color (Crimson Pearl) was a '94 Turbo Legacy color only and quite rare. I owned one too, but a 5-speed. There's a link to it in my signature, but I recently sold it to focus financially on my other fun car instead of blowing money on the Turbo Legacy all the time.

you know.. i have often thought about selling this car; just to get something newer and nicer. Buuuut its just so hard of a car to find, in about a year i will own it out right.. then i can build it for just an all around track/ spirited DD. but in order to accomplish that i will have to buy another car thats a DD. so who knows...

Also.. i know the 22T is the best motor for higher HP due to the closed deck. I would like to do a regrind on the SOHC(s) and free up some airflow. I had a few DOHC engines and hate checking spark plugs and timing belts on those engines. i love how simple this engine is!

If i am not mistaken, this engine comes with oil piston squirters correct?

I also have ACL rod and main bearings that i want to install before these 19 year old bearings decide to go pop.. I just need to find the time to pull the engine, split the block and replace said items.

Yeah, my problem was that my SS was supposed to be my DD when I bought it but it was just too much fun to mod and I kind of neglected what is supposed to be my "fun" car, the '84 Z28. So I lost some main bearings on the fun car and decided to sell my SS for a nice Legacy wagon and put some money into the Z28, so it is getting an LS1 and a 6-speed now while I putt around in the '99 Legacy.

Yes, the 22T block does have oil squirters. Some of them have probably fallen out and are sitting in the bottom of your oilpan by now, they have a habit of doing that after 20 years and a few miles.

As far as the heads go, if you want to stick with the SOHC heads which I find to be a fine idea, you can get the cams ground at Delta Cam in Washington state pretty cheaply, and that will open up some flow and power. Don't bother with any porting and polishing, just cram more boost in there. The heads aren't great at upper end flow like some of the DOHC heads are, but they can do just fine for a fun car and you are correct about the maintenance being way easier.

Here's a great and fairly cheap combo that will have you grinning from ear to ear. In fact, it's probably the cheapest path to decent power in these cars right now:
Stock block and SOHC heads with Delta Cams
JDM TD05-16g with 90-degree inlet
Intercooler (you got this taken care of)
USDM STi 550cc injectors in EJ22 N/A fuel rails
RobTune
JECS or Autecs plastic MAF
MBC with 18psi of boost spooling fully at under 3k and holding all the way to redline
You would easily see horsepower equivalent to a stock new STi with this combo.

With anything else you really will need to have an aftermarket engine management system of some sort, and anything like that is both expensive and completely custom for our cars.

i have seen this rob tune all over this forum.. does he retune the stock ECU? can i do the same thing rob does by getting a piggy back?

does this ecu learn around the short term and long term fuel trims? i stopped at 10psi with the wrx turbo due to a few reasons.. one i dont want to detonate, two i dont have proper EM. I thought about going with a TD05 but i wouldnt mind a JDM twinscroll turbo..

i remember seeing the fuel rails and the STi injectors.. but how will i adjust latency of the injectors? wont that be an issue or is the stock EM capable of doing such?

Rob (the person) tunes EJ20G ECUs to take advantage of mods and make more power safely. He has a thread on here, http://bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=43744

The EJ20G ECU takes only simple mods to install on an EJ22t with the stock engine harness. I recommend you look at the sticky thread in the Electrical forum, specifically the 4to2 converter and PhyrraM's EJ20G ECU thread.

A piggyback will never be good enough for serious reliable power. It doesn't change the ECU programming, rather it fools it by simulating different sensor inputs.

Rob takes the injector size into account with his tunes, so you could theoretically run any size injector you want. The limitation on power is the readable flow of air through the MAF, which he is apparently working on but hasn't been able to fix. The eventual solution to that looks to be the use of a 300ZX MAF, but that is a ways down the road.

I think sometimes he does but you could probably get one cheaper on your own. I've bought and sold several 4-plug EJ20G ECUs for right around $100. I don't have any right now though.
